Fremont Police Replaced an Old Dodge Charger With a Tesla Cop Car
Kinda interesting to see, considering that whole i3 fiasco with LAPD.

Fremont traffic is so bad that any perps with ludicrous mode don't have anywhere to get away anyways. With all the condos and townhouses going in, traffic's going to be even worse. You'd think with all the breaks Fremont's given Tesla they should've been able to get a 5yr old car for much less...

Having spend a lot of time in a scout car I don't think it's a viable option for much of the work. Way to expensive and I'm not sure it will stand up to the abuse. It may be able to fill some rolls but I guess time will tell.
I sure don't see it working in northern climates where you're running the heat on high for a 12 hour shift. |

I work for SPD fleets and we were just talking about this the other day. Some of the problems are cost, infrastructure, all the equipment that goes into the vehicle, police durability, even ballistic door panels would need to be added. We even have to consider public appearance. Yeah they bought this one used but that wouldn’t be possible when you replacing several vehicles a year and also vehicles that get totaled yearly. Most of our stuff is used 24-7.
Not going to work for us. |

No way Tesla quality is going to stand up to patrol work. Good grief.

A full EV in itself is a good idea for police work considering there's lot of sitting is involved and would be less wear on the vehicle. I dont see it being viable right now until the batteries are able to have enough of a charge to be used for a full day of work as well as a way to rapidly charge them for a quicker turn around. We're just not there yet on a technology stand point to make this work.

Parts have been made available to CERTIFIED Repair Shops. You would obviously know more about the whole wear and tear when it comes to police cars than I would anyways. But like I said before, it might be one of those "show" cars mainly. The Gang Task Force here does it with luxury vehicles that have been seized.

Fine with me- they sit on for hours at a time idling and driving. Save the tax payers some fuel money.

Nope, black and white. The whole idea is to show it off. I suspect this will see little actual patrol work.

I totally agree. They are getting better when I comes to already having them outfitted with some features that used to be added on later. This also saves money.

This car will cost more than just buying another Dodge, but saving money isn't the point here. The goal is to have a tool for virtue signaling.
