I guess its a good thing my tires are shot after 2 years! Someone should nominate the Bridgestone RFT with an award.

The issue is tire stores sometimes sell very old tires 6+ years, in the video they show you the 4 digit code near the rim of the tire, some manufacturers like good year only put this code on the inside making it so you have to slide under your car with a flashlight to read it. The code is the manufacturing date of the tire and looks like 3495 meaning the 34th week of 1995 or 1208 meaning 12th week of 2008... |

There was a thread about this subject in the Wheels / Tires forum I believe. I would only buy tires from Tire Rack (they have really high turnover rate), and I check them when I receive them. I don't think I've ever received a tire more than 3 months old from them.
Other members suggested you can store them for up to 6 years out of the sun / in trash bags etc. I'll pass. If it's been sitting for 6 years and your tires last another 2 years.... Do you really wanna drive around on those?

Yet another tire failure/SUV/rollover accident.
Tire age is certainly a risk factor. But even more so is tire pressure, and I can not help but wonder if anyone checked the tire pressures before the young man headed off on his trip. This smells more of lawyers angling for a case than the result of a real, and impartial, accident investigation. |
