Have any comments actually said it's comparable to a Porsche? I've only read Autoblog and while they don't appear to know the difference in a Cayman and a Cayenne (hopefully, or this is really bad news) they did say this:

You can find a rhythm in ess turns, but the Supra doesn't give the effortless cadence of a Porsche Cayenne, surely one of the benchmark competitors.

LOL @ thread title. Only read C&D review, but LOL @ that too. It's not a review when they don't know the actual specs of it or even what it actually looks like. Then we have interior, fit & finish etc. In other words, when Toyota stops dicking around, we'll know. Until then, I'm sick of this car already. #gazoof

The problem with the Supra is that it is IDENTICAL to the BMW Z4 besides a few external body panels and Toyota badges.

So it's great that it is fast... but Toyota needs to differentiate itself. It's no longer the iconic sports car it was.

I wouldn’t call it a Z4 with different body panels. I feel it’s a little more distinct than that.

It doesnt have to be IDENTICAL. They may vary spring rates, ARB rates, even final gearing, and of course different engine/gearbox/esp mappings etc. BMW often varies these parameters between between models on the same platform, even brake rotor size etc.

But they do share the same platform, so identical suspension arm type etc, but by varying the mentioned above components they can give a certain different feel to a car if they choose that seems technically the same on the surface.

Whether they do vary those components you have to search through the parts cataloges when they are available or do hands on measuring between models.

Sure... unique, with a BMW engine, a BMW steering wheel, BMW dashboard, BMW iDrive, BMW seats, BMW chassis. Just because it has Toyota badges doesn't make it a Toyota.

You can change a few things.. but its like saying the BRZ is different than the GT86. It has a different front end and slightly different spring rates. Otherwise it is the same car and comes from the same factory.

I'm not doubting the car... it may be very nice. But as I said, not enough to differentiate it from the Z4. A few badges and tweaked suspension doesn't make it a Toyota.

A iconic Japanese sports car now made in Europe with nearly 100% BMW parts... Sad day for Toyota.

The comment I read from Toyota is that it would be as significant a difference as the GT86 is to the BRZ. So barely any. Rollbars and shock tuning. That's amazingly weak if true.

Looks good, sounds good (no ASD lol), reviews say it drives well, what’s not to like here? No manual is about the only issue I have with it. If it’s priced well, this could be a hit

At least for the moment, one has a roof and the other doesn’t

On the Autocar video he mentions that the tuning of both models was done independently from one another. No details yet on what that actually included of course.

BMW wanted to build another Z4 and searched for a partner to make things viable and increase its market potential. And Toyota stepped in.

Those reviews are very hard pressed to compare the Supra with the GT86, but the real car it should be compared to is the Z4. Just as most MX5 reviews compare it to the current 124 spider and not say...an RX7 or so.

I'm trying to find something good to say about this car and I found it: I like the rocker panel little winglet thingies.

I'll leave it at that.

Someone's probably waiting to drop a 2JZ in there already.
Wonder why they couldn't modernize the 2J with a 6mt and put some lexus interior pieces in there.

So basically, if you want:

a) the convertible go see BMW.
b) the coupe go see Toyota.

amirite?

Yes.
And I think that as long as the Supra is build, chances of bmw making a z4 coupe are low.
That car would compete incredibly with the supra, and if I were Toyota I wouldnt like that (I would have negotiated that in the deal at least)

2JZ swap will happen within a month or 2 of them hitting the streets. Book it.

No MT, no care. Sad day.

Also, based on what I've seen the rumored MSRP at, what's the point of this over a Cayman? Surely the Porsche has a much nicer interior... not to mention status (not that I'd care personally), resale value, etc.

Have you seen how much a new Cayman costs, especially with a few options? A Cayman with similar specs and features would cost almost twice as much.

Exactly, Cayman prices are bonkers. With any decent options it's probably double the Supra.

I think a more apt question is why anybody would choose the Supra over say, a GT 350?
