$45 - $50K - What would you get?
Hi Guys,
A quick question: My brother is in the market for a new car. He doesn't want a BMW. He doesn't want a performance car. He wants something that is a bit more sedate and luxurious. I have directed him to the VW Touareg and an A6 3.0. Any other suggestions? What would you get if you needed a sedate luxurious car in this price range? |

I'd recommend against the Touareg because it seems like my neighbor's is always in the shop.
Is he looking for power? Either a new Acura TL (depending on how the 09 looks), a Nissan Altima V6, or a Lexus ES would all fall into that price range, including nice gadgets and power. If 'sedate' means 'not a v6' there's the regular Altima, or the new A4 2.0T coming in 09 as well. I am coming off a lease of an A4 and with a manual transmission, the VW/Audi 2.0T engine is peppy because it's turbocharged, even though it tops out at 200hp. It can be chipped too (with some other adjustments, like a new diverter valve). In all seriousness, did your brother try a non-sport-package BMW? People here might rip me apart for it, but it wouldn't be as harsh a ride. I went with the -xi, and it's somewhere in the middle from my experience.

To be fair, it is a $50k-ish car...
What, the A6 is under $50k? EDIT: Out of the list from xPB above, I'd put the Infiniti M35 on the real real short list.

Sedate is subjective.
But by definition, I think Audi's are calm, composed, & serine. It shows you're successful without screaming "IM RICH BIAAATCH" In fact, if I weren't so partial & loyal to the name, I'd be in an A4 for the next few years. If I were you, a BMW driver, I'd help skew his decision more to the .....BMW side? ps. 6 months ago, my brother too was in search of a car for his wife. He ended up w/ a 08 white e90. Had it not been for me, he would've Benzed it up. |

Jaguar XF has a base price of $50K, but worth a look. VERY sexy car for sure.
If he wants something more sedate then yes, any of the Lexus' listed above. The ES is very similar to the Camry with a more luxurious wrapper. The new A4 will be very nice too. It looks similar to the A5. Get it with the V6 engine and it'll be in the price range. The Cadillac CTS is really sharp now. The interior is fantastic. You can get it in AWD if need be also.

As soon as you said sedate and luxuries the first thought that came into my mind was the es350. Your bro doesn't sound like a car guy and that is the perfect car for a non car guy that wants something nice. Fits right in his price range very nice interior SUPER quiet and a nice ride to boot. Great reliability and dealer network as well. Good luck!

Wow, that is some list up here. Most of them never came to mind.
Brother is a bit of a car guy but his other half has laid the law down - no more fast cars. And she hates the way BMWs look. So he doesn't know what to buy. He was looking at an e90 before but now is struggling to settle on which one to buy. And GreenThree You are right. There is no 3.0 A6. I mixed it up with the 3.2 non-quattro. Which is pretty cheap out here - only $51K I don't think the ES is an option - it is just a tarted up Camry. |
