Here are details about the Mega Millions lotto game that the California Lottery is joining:

OBJECT: Players pay $1 to try to match six winning numbers between 1 and 52.

DRAWINGS: Tuesdays and Fridays. Sales for the first game involving California start Wednesday at stores that sell lottery tickets. Drawings for California's own lotto game will continue on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

JACKPOTS: Lottery officials predict that with California joining Mega Millions, jackpots could reach $400 million or even $500 million. Mega Millions had a $363 million jackpot - the nation's record - in May 2000 and a $331 million jackpot in April 2002.

OTHER PARTICIPATING STATES: New York, Texas, Massachusetts, Michigan, Ohio, Maryland, Georgia, Illinois, New Jersey, Virginia and Washington.
