When did you start using Google?
I started using Google in the Summer of 1999. I heard about it while watching morning news and they interviewed a Computer Science professor named Richard Rosenberg. He recommended several search engines and one of them was Google. I never heard of it, but after using it for some searches, I was totally blown away by its powerful accurate searches and its performance and during that time, ad free searches.
After that, I said, goodbye to my favourite search engines Altavista and Yahoo. Last edited by The_Blob; 06-18-2008 at 12:09 AM.. |

I still prefer yahoo.com. Don't know exactly why, but I have an email account and I'm just used to it. I haven't had any experience that would make me change to google.

Before Google, Altavista was king. Now, Altavista is weak as heck compared to Google. I think Google might end up as a Altavista if they don't start taking out crap search results out of their searches. Anyone here notice that a lot of the times, your final search page results for Google has a lot of unrelated crap that's more related to ads? However, has anyone here also noticed that Google searches are weaker than ever? It's like they're not improving their search engine but degrading it. Google..... I think they might just end up as a Altavista...... |

What you said is incorrect, Yahoo has their own search algorithms or methods. In 2000 Yahoo made a deal with Google to have their search "powered" by Google, but that agreement/licensing has ended long ago. http://www.google.com/googlefriends/alert2_2000.html Quote:

Format wise, it's still very similar to Google. I did not say it's a 100% Google clone. Yahoo used to be very unique and there was be categories and groups in its searches. Although, back then, specific searching on Yahoo was very very very weak. If you were trying to find a specific file, the results were extremely limited and Altavista was still the King before Google was introduced. Yahoo is still a Google wannabe, but weaker in its searches. |

Pretty much since it's debut, either '98 or '99. While I was in high school.

I don't really remember. All I do know is that even though Yahoo has been and probably always will be my home page, I never use the search. I start my searches using the little search box on the top right hand side of most modern browsers. Google searches seem to yield consistently better results vs. any of their competitors.
