I am posting here because the Tesla forums are highly biased.

We have had a Model X for about a month now, and we have had some pretty close calls with the falcon wing doors almost hitting the kids. At this point I get worried every time I put the kids in and out of the car.

I decided to browse through YouTube to see if others are worried, and saw a few videos testing the door sensors with vegetables or sticks. A lot of the times the doors did not stop and just crushed the object. I am really not sure these doors are going to stop quick enough if one of my younger kids are in the way, especially not if their fingers are in the wrong place.

My gut is telling me I should get rid of the car because of this, but I am not sure if I am overreacting or not. Maybe we get used to it, but since this is mostly my wife's car, and the kids are going to be in it daily, I am not sure it is worth the risk.

if your wife likes the car enough to keep it, a small talk with kids about the doors and keeping eye on their hands etc. every time doors move can make everyone happy..

On the same note, are minivan automatic sliding doors any different?

Not a fan of Tesla...the savings on gas is negated by the cost of the car. They do not impress visually ( IMOP of course) and the fact that your limited in your ability to drive long distances is not a favorable combination. Now that I know about the hand crushers that is another reason ...I agree...get rid of it and buy a 135i for 19k.

if you really want to save the planet, drive and maintain your honda civic for a million miles and then buy a 4 year old civic with 100k and do the same, this idea that a new electric car every 4 years helps the planet is a fantasy, it is pure marketing

Ditch it, obviously it has you worried and even if you tell your self it's ok, you are still going to worry.

I can say if I had small children I would be worried about it too.

Kids always come first. If your worried about their safety do something to remedy that. You won’t regret getting rid of your car as much as you’d regret injuring your kids. Just my opinion. Good luck, guy. You’re in a tough spot.

I think Teslas are really cool cars personally. Wouldn't mind owning one one day.

But with that being said, I think you've already answered your question by posting this thread. It sucks but your kids' safety comes first, there is clearly no sensor in place to prevent an object from being crushed, like their fingers.

I have a 2 year old and another due soon and I would never heard the end of it from my wife let alone feel incredibly guilty myself if something could happened that could have been prevented. Just not worth the risk for me. After all its just a toy. Good luck.

OP,
How old are your kids?
Mine are 9y,6y,3y,and 2month infant
I didnt have any close calls to even be thinking about it.
Maybe the issue lies in the operation?
I normally close the doors when older kids buckling up in the 3rd row and when i'm done fastening younger kids to their car seats in the second row. I dont think i have situation when they random around when you need to close the doors.
Convenience of these doors are just underaprecciated

Now, there was one time the door bumped my wife. It stopped immediately. It was not even enough to call it a painful one.

With regular doors, there are far more injuries, since you can slam it and it will never stop against object.
This one at least slowly closing with minor force and you are in control of closing

P.S. If you really want to get rid of your Tesla, then you've come to the right place

OP - Now that you've posted here, you GOTTA get rid of the Tesla.

Why do I say this with such conviction...

Well - if something were to happen to injure your one of your kids that you were reasonably able to foretell - then you'd be filled with regret that you didn't follow through on your instinct.

You've foretold in black and white to the public internet that you think this is a potential risk - and now you've done that - if something were to happen - then you'd foreseen it and did nothing to prevent it.

If you kept it - you never know - it might never happen that you had an incident.

Good luck reconciling what you're going to do - it's a tough spot to be in, but personally I think it's an easy decision to get yourself out of that tough spot.

New cars have far better sensors, now including interior ones as well

OP, although there does seem to be some risk involved, a good conversation with your kids may be in order

There are many dangerous things in life and your kids need to learn how to avoid them.

Maybe instituting a simple 'all clear?' Before closing the doors will prevent accidents.

Whenever I'm working with a jack/quickjack/car lift, before lowering the car I ask 'all clear?' And I don't lower it until everyone near the car answers all clear.
