Lowered a Jeep - Is this sacriledge?

So we bought my wife a new Grand Cherokee last summer. We've been very happy with it. Well built, solid ride and good value.

Last fall my wife blurted out, "You should lower it." She didn't like the wheel well gap and it's actually a bit tall to get in and out of. My first response was, "it's a Jeep, you can't lower a Jeep" but after the initial shock to my system had passed, I started thinking it might be a good idea. We also have a Wrangler, so it's not like this is going to get off road use and it is a bit tall, the wheel well gap was pretty off the chart, and being that it's the subtle Altitude package, thought it might look really good. And it should help fuel economy on the highway.

Well, here is the result.

I remember reading the GC sits higher than any other midsize SUV currently made. Maybe that's why it's ride height still looks acceptable lowered?

I like it. I want to do th same thing to my wife's Q7 but she won't let me. I'm not sure if she'd notice though, even if I did.

I hear where you're coming from and now that you say that, the picture does look a little that way, but in person it doesn't appear crossover at all. Looks more like a sport SUV (dumb name - I know). It's on 20"s and has a pretty solid presence, so I have no fear of approaching crossover territory. The picture would probably look better with some other car in it for scale.

Let's be honest...it's a "Jeep" in name only. I see no problems.

I agree.

The funny thing is that I tried so hard to get my wife to buy an F31 before we made this purchase. Ultimately there were two barriers for my wife. First the value wasn't very good. The additional sport of the F31 doesn't have any return for her as she doesn't appreciate it, so the price point was significantly higher and she didn't see any benefit. Second, she does like a higher view of the road. She has had several SUVs since she last drove a 325i sedan as her daily. She is used to it now. My F30 has manual seats and M sport suspension and I set the seats all the way at the bottom, so she has a preconception that the F31 would be very low. I couldn't even get her to go drive one. And the color of the Grand Cherokee sold her when she first saw it. Oh well, my batting average is pretty good, but you still strike out sometimes.

Why not? Very few people get Jeeps to actually go off-roading anymore. My Subaru Forester has probably seen more dirt than 99% of the jeeps I see driving around Los Angeles. Are all Jeeps 4WD/AWD or do they come in city-slicker FWD as well?

It is pretty subtle, which is exactly what I was hoping for.

Man you are right. I take heat for not having any lift on my LJ. I do plan a TummyTucker though and take no prisoners on the trails, so that helps.

There is this whole ex Hummer street Wrangler thing now that I just loath. And with snorkles no less. Some people just miss the point.

My Wrangler sees plenty of dirt.

I'm not sure, but I have had 3 and they have all been 4WD/AWD.

A proper jeep in it's natural habitat! If your other Jeep is just for the wife for kid hauling, I see no problem in a slight drop. Judging from the photos, it's actually still got decent clearance in case you want to go over some parking pylons! Lets not forget, with a lower CG, the Jeep is now safer to drive.

It's just a Grand Cherokee mate, you can slam it on 24s and no one would say a thing.

I'm not really concerned, just sharing my latest non BMW mod and thought it was kind-of funny. More tongue-in-cheek.

Anything goes with SUVs now. Look at the TrackHawk, Porsche, Lamborhini, there is no end to the silliness for something still sort-of sold as a truck. All these high horsepower things would be better suited with a lower weight and CG, but then they wouldn't sell so many to those who want a Tahoe with blistering take-off when the pedal goes down.
