Nissan Variable Compression Turbo Engine!

(can't embed, soz)

If this works well it could be a game changer.

What do you think?

Yep.

Saab did this thirty years ago.
We've been over this. No they didn't. This is like claiming that Mercedes built Wankel cars because of one show car.

It was also less than twenty years ago:

Now lets combine this with Toyota's Dynamic Force innovation, Mazda's HCCI tech, BMW VALVETRONIC and hybridize it for maximum reliability and ease of maintenance

Can't wait to see what this beast does @ 200 WHP mated to a CVT and econobox chassis!

The mode of operation for altering compression seems quite different though.

SAAB:
Quote:
To alter the combustion chamber volume, the SVC 'lowers' the cylinder head closer to the crankshaft. It does this by replacing the typical one-part engine block with a two-part block, with the crankshaft in the lower block and the cylinders in the upper portion. The two blocks are hinged together at one side. By pivoting the upper block around the hinge point, the volume of the combustion chamber can be modified. In practice, the SVC adjusts the upper block through a small range of motion, using a hydraulic actuator
Nissan:
Quote:
The pistons in the VC-T engine are connected to rods that are attached to one end of an elliptic device Nissan calls a multilink. The multilink is mounted on the crankshaft where the connecting rods normally go. The other end of the multilink has a short rod that is connected to a shaft. An electrically controlled actuator twists the shaft, causing the multilink to tilt up or down slightly. When the end of the multilink closest to the piston is tilted up, the piston travels to the top of the cylinder. That is high-compression mode, 14.1.
http://www.autozine.org/technical_sc...ssion.html#SVC

And Porsche has an entirely different concept as well:
Quote:
Porsche and Hilite conceived a way to adjust the apparent length of the connecting rods, the metal arms that connect to the crankshaft and drive the pistons up and down. A solenoid allows small oil-pressure-driven rods and an eccentric adjuster to raise or lower the bearing supporting the piston. The patent diagram appears to show a high and low position currently, not a variable height.

The car starts off with the piston in the high position. When the turbo begins injecting pressurized air, the piston drops to the low position. That reduces the compression ratio momentarily, allowing for more turbocharger boost and more power. The Porsche-Hilite design appears to be comparatively simple, at least compared to other variable-compression-ratio efforts that date back a century.

Ideally it'd be in a new S-Chassis (or similar) and with larger displacement. would be nice to see Nissan make decent sports cars again.

I'm in full support of anything that can save the internal combustion engine from extinction by way of EV's. Papa bless you Nissan, this is a big step in the right direction.
