Ford killing off all cars except Mustang, will focus on SUVs and trucks
From the National Post - Canada
Big news out of Dearborn as Ford announced it will kill off every single traditional “car” it sells in the North American market, beside the Mustang, by 2020. A spokesperson stated Ford will end production of the Fiesta in May 2019; the Taurus will get the axe in March 2019; and the Fusion will be culled at an unspecified time before 2020. The Focus will live on as the Focus Active, a CUV-ified version of the car complete with lifted ride height and black plastic fender flares. By 2020, Ford plans to make 90 per cent of its lineup CUVs, SUVs, trucks, and commercial vehicles. The move comes as no surprise among falling car sales and rising crossover sales. In a world where the Honda Accord is outsold by the CR-V, this had to happen sooner or later. Ford will likely add additional CUV models to fill some of the gaps left by the departing car models. The Mustang, a car entwined in Ford’s own brand identity, is safe for now. The cull is part of a plan to cut US$5 billion in planned spending from 2019 to 2022. It’s also gambling that gas prices won’t appreciably rise in that time, a factor that would drive people into smaller, more efficient vehicles instead of utility vehicles. |

My friend with the Focus RS is glad to hear this.
His car will be worth a lot more when no-one can buy them new.

Yeah that was head gasket issues. Ford did a recall. He already had his done.
They were putting Mustang head gaskets on this engine thinking they were the same. They in fact, were not.

It does seem like there has been a permanent shift to CUVs and SUVs in the market.
With that being said, sedan sales still around to hundreds of thousands for the big automakers. I suspect this move has a lot to do with the reason why Hackett was given the job in the first place: to make that stock price increase. |

its stupid to be selling the taurus and fusion. is there anyone anywhere that actually wants one? compromise cars. they shoulda dropped them years ago. now only having 2 cars... not sure thats a great idea. i think you'd want a compact, midsize and a larger sedan.

In the meantime... Mercedes is introducing the new A-class in North America.
This is awesome news in my book. And I believe they will sell like crazy. Ford can survive on F-150 trucks alone. Taurus? Fusion? Good riddance. I still think they are making a mistake phasing out Focus and Fiesta. Oh well, more room for the competition. |

I see a ton of Fusions around here and all of our local PD's have the Taurus. I wonder if they will still sell that version of it or if they will only market the SUV interceptors?

Speaking of the A Class, a luxury sedan, we can reasonably predict that people who still buy passenger cars because they care about driving dynamics will migrate to luxury products. Luxury sedans have always had the mindshare when it comes to driving excitement and the luxury automakers will use that leverage more and more as non-luxury sedans start to disappear. Even Ford has not made any announcement about what they plan for Lincoln's sedan lineup. But even if they do decide to can the Continental in the US and not replace the aging MKZ with a new non-alphabet soup model, there will be others who remain in the game for years to come. I don't see RWD (or RWD-biased AWD) luxury sedans in particular going away before 2030, and they could be around for much longer than that. In a way, the sedan will become the new sports car - a (typically) premium-priced vehicle that's purpose built to trade some practicality for a little fun. Of course true sports cars themselves won't go away either, but that segment is shrinking too, and will continue to. |
