Going to Playa Del Carmen, questions.
All inclusive resort (The Royal, Playa Del Carmen), however I imagine we will hit up some bars or clubs not on the resort. What's the currency situation there? Pesos? USD? Better to Exchange in the US or Mexico? How much to take?

I was there a couple of weeks ago,.... I'm from Mexico too, so I know a bit,... I believe it's better to exchange there for pesos, I went to a club named Bali and I spent like $50 or $60 bucks for a 2x1 Bacardi bottle with 2 other friends tip included, so it's about $150 + tip. Not expensive IMO. This could give you an idea.

Agreed I just recently got back from Playa Del Carmen (actually went down to Playacar really but spent a good bit of time in Playa Del Carmen). You should have a blast if you are doing the all-inclusive bit. That is what we did and man was it nice not worrying about much.
You can also pay most respectable places with dollars if you want to avoid the currency exchange.

Exchange your USD for pesos at the airport or the hotel. F/X rate should be around Ps.10.30 for US$1.00 But sometimes they buy those USD from at at $9.90 to $10.10. I wouldn't really worry unless your are echanging thousands of USD. I think you love Playa de Carmen and it isn't really that expensive at all. Not too inexpensive either. IMO, just about right. Good luck.

haven't been to playa del carmen but i went to cancun last month so i'm assuming it's pretty much the same.
you won't need to bring much cash since you're staying at an all inclusive resort. i brought about $150 b/w my girlfriend and i for tips. a few bucks goes a long way there. the people i tipped remembered me the entire trip and gave me the royal treatment. i didn't exchange any money into pesos. most places accepted USD and they just give you change in pesos. i just exchanged as i needed the money. it was around $10.6 or so at the bank and $10 at the resort. not a big difference so you don't lose out on a lot.
