I find the majority of places I eat lunch at only take cash... maybe it's because I prefer local places and mom and pop shops. Trendy hipster (and pricey) places are usually the ones that prefer cards.

Paying cash means the business avoids credit card transaction fees. Some also under report income this way to avoid taxes.

Businesses that go this route should make it clear to customers before they reach the register. I almost always use cash at lunch even though I usually use plastic for dinner. I think it is ridiculous for any business that gets paid at a register (like first restaurant in story) to refuse to take cash but that's their choice.

I thought hipster means you like everything old with the exception of apple products. I haven't seen a hipster paying with cash however.

I will guarantee you, if a business does not take cash I will never be a customer.
Ask a hipster waitress or waiter if they would rather be tipped in cash or credit, if they say it doesn't matter, they are destine to be a poor hipster the rest of there life because they just don't understand.

Government would like all of us to go to a cashless society, Better for tracking everything we do. So I have decided to go all cash as much as I can starting in 2018.

I must be missing something. Why would a non account holder try to make any type of deposit at a bank?

I see the same thing since there is a 3%+ vig they have to pay the card companies. Also I use cash for things like Craigslist, swap meets etc. I acknowledge that the world is slowly going cashless (for control and tracking, not convenience) which is why a crypto currency like bitcoin that still allows arms length transactions is a future alternative to cash.

I have people who rent who make cash deposits. Seems silly to me. I guess the bank is trying to stem money laundering. I would think you’d track patterns to detect that though vs just cut off all cash deposits.

1. The Feds can track your transactions in real time absent a warrant.
2. Google knows about everything you purchase: https://www.technologyreview.com/s/6...rofile-of-you/
3. I purchased an M4 for cash this year, Dealer would not consummate the transaction until I provided my SSN - they are obligated under current law to report these type of transactions, and have to ensure that your name is not on a "list" of people banned from purchasing technology for the purpose of exporting it to foreign countries on the banned list.

Unless you use cash every purchase you make is tracked, collected and stored - forever. It's impossible to get off of the grid completely, if you use cash, you still have to get it somewhere - ATM or bank withdrawal - unless you're a drug dealer or involved in a criminal enterprise. Even more scary than the government tracking your purchases are your potential ex-wive/s, mine have always had every bank record subpoenaed upon divorce. I had to sit in court and justify a $30 haircut, worse still 1st wife's attorney chastised me for filling prescriptions for my children with brand name medications vs. cheaper generic drugs. I guess some people don't mind this total invasion of privacy, after all millions are posting their entire lives and every move they make on social media. Any attorney worth their salt will tell you to close all social media in the case of litigation. Apologies for the thread hijack......

Sorry to hear. I went through something similar despite it being an irreconcilable differences/no-fault divorce and joint custody of the children. An agreeable split ended up being, “I’m going to take everything I can”.

Agree on just about everything being tracked. Even if it isn’t financial, they know where you went or even where you’re going before you get there because you looked it up and got directions.
