Although I couldn't find the full chase scene between a R32 Skyline and a FTO, Jackie Chan's Thunderbolt is one of my favorite car movies.

You have the Fast and the Furious aka worst car movie ever but you don't have the second Matrix? The chase mentioned below is pretty damn good too.

Ronin was a modern classic...spawned a whole new generation of good car chases. Guys who worked on Ronin apparently were used in a whole slew of car chases scenes in other movies.

However car chases are getting more and more involved as digital effects are being added. No longer is it enough to have two cars chasing each other and a single car following as the chase camera. You need helicopters for aerial shots, multiple chase cameras mounted in crash cars with full roll cages, disposable cameras in boxes along the shoot scene meant to collide with the vehicles, hydraulics to flip cars over at high speed...all intergrated with digital effects.

In my opinion, the pinnacle of car chases was most recently achieved by Michael Bay in Bad Boys II:

Say what you will about the film or the director...but the chase scene was very well constructed along with some humour...

Bullitt FTW. The original and still the best. Really the Citizen Cane of car chase movies. Often duplicated but never good as the original.

Bullitt of course set the standard (and defined the car chase), but fast forward to modern times, Ronin still takes the cake for me, the car chases are just insane (with spectacular driving, cinemagraphy and settings).

I remember a movie whre 3 or 4 black BMW 3-series (with the bad guys) where either chasing or performing a "job" - anybody recalls this movie? They were probably E46.

Mr. and Ms. Smith had 3 BMWs in a chace scene but I think they were 5-series.

I would say that Ronin would be my favorite all time....but with digital CGI in all movies now, I say that Bad Boys 2 and matrix 2 (both were highway scenes) were surreal! I could watch those parts on my home theatre over and over.

Good idea for a thread.

There are so many good chases. It is hard to decide.

When I have more time I will watch the various chases and vote then.
