We’d like to believe that these are the first spy shots of the Lexus GS successor, caught during some benchmark tests at the Nurburgring.

The size of the prototype certainly fits the bill, as well as the fact that Lexus brought a Mercedes E-Class to benchmark against it.

There are a lot of rumors suggesting that Lexus has decided to axe the GS from its line-up, with the current model being the last of the GS family. Another report suggests that the Japanese premium car maker has decided to replace the GS with a new ES model.

Part of the reasoning behind this is financial, with the ES being based off Camry’s cheaper front-wheel drive platform, which is Toyota’s much advertised global TNGA, and the current GS riding on a more expensive rear-driven architecture.

Lexus could also decide to give the model a completely new nameplate but at this point we have more questions than answers. Despite the camouflage, we can already see that the design of the new Lexus will be more grounded, featuring a smaller grille that the one featured in the current model.

The only thing we can be certain about is that the prototype is a hybrid, thanks that yellow round sticker on the rear window, which is mandatory for all hybrid test cars on the Nurburgring due to safety regulations.

Despite the model not being available in Europe, the company may have brought it to Germany for further development by its European arm.]]

Seems like they could kill the ES and replace it with this and 99% of drivers would never notice that it was rwd. Having two cars so similar in size and features just doesn't make sense.

Almost same for CTS whose sales have suffered due to CT6 which is almost same price and size.

RLX sold 555 units for all of 2017 - this thing is an embarrassment.

5 years ago the A6 and CTS were no where close to GS in sales, thats how far it has fallen.

We are in July 2017 - last year is long gone.
In 2017 GS sales fell by over 50% YTD. A lot of which are going to new Genesis imo.

The A6 is about to be redesigned as well which will only increase its sales.
CTS and CT6 can't both survive.

I think the GS was supposed to be like the 5 series. With the Avalon/ES being about the same size and sharing one of (not all) the engines, a buyer probably is left to wonder what they are paying extra for. The materials are a little nicer and it is RWD, but that's about it besides the upcharge.

I agree Lexus could save money by folding a performance trim package with a bigger motor into the ES and just get rid of the GS. When you grow up, you buy the LS if you feel so inclined. They could also offer two hybrid systems, the standard Camry 200hp and the larger 300-330hp v6 which will fit since they already put the v6 in the Avalon/ES. I already own an Avalon Hybrid and would love more power if they offered it in a Hybrid package. The jump from an Avalon hybrid to a GS hybrid is like $25k. So offering a regular performance package and a hybrid performance package sounds good to me lol.

No doubt that this year's sales are down, but I rather wait for this years full figures. It had a decent early release. But its getting old and reaching the end of its life cycle; also fresher designs from the competition aren't helping its case either.

Yes, Most likely true. Looks like they are taking a page from Lexus' play book in the 90s by undercutting everyone. A lot of people are tempted by the $41k starting price tag. IMO, Not bad for a TT-V6. To be honest, if I were in the market I would probably take a G80 over the base GS.

Japanese magazine Best Car is reporting that the next-generation Lexus GS F will be powered by a 4.0L twin-turbo V8 with over 590 horsepower and 500 lb.ft of torque.

Last week, Best Car claimed the same engine would be used in a high-performance variant of the LC.

This new rumor directly contradicts recent reports of the GS sedan being cancelled — the change in product planning would be a welcome reversal for Lexus enthusiasts everywhere.

^^^ if true that would mean Toyota is finally waking up and realizing naturally aspirated V8s have not been competitive in super sedans and super coupes for years.

However it would be unfortunate if the power figure is correct because they'd be entering the game already outgunned, just as everyone else is graduating to 600hp+. Regardless of whether the GS stays or goes they still need a proper high performance engine for the LC. It would be nice to see one in the LS too. Maybe they could even put it in the RC - that would catch just about everybody off guard.

Toyota has revealed the first details of a new sedan concept it's bringing to the Tokyo Motor Show. And it has us wondering if it couldn't preview a new Lexus as well.

What you're looking at here is the Toyota Crown concept, previewing what will, when it reaches showrooms next summer, be the fifteenth generation of a model line stretching all the way back (in the Japanese Domestic Market) to 1955.

The current model has been on sale since 2012, so Toyota's taking the opportunity to pack the new one with all the latest tricks, including vehicle-to-vehicle communications and advanced safety systems. It's also boasting having tested the thing at the Nürburgring, basing it on the same Toyota New Global Architecture as the new Camry (among others in different forms).

More intriguing to us, however, is the potential version that could reach US shores: not as the Avalon that essentially takes the Crown's place as Toyota's largest sedan in America, but as the replacement for the Lexus GS (and ES) sedans.

Like the GX that's based on the Land Cruiser Prado, the Lexus GS is closely based on the current Crown. It stands to reason, then, that the next-gen Lexus sedan will share much with the new Crown as well. Based on the dimensions the automaker has released for the pre-production concept, it's actually a bit bigger than the current Lexus GS in every dimension but height (which remains identical).

Lexus is expected to launch one new model to replace both the smaller ES (which currently shares its segment with the sportier IS) and the larger GS in an effort to streamline its product lineup and avoid cannibalizing its own sales.

With the Lexus division set to unveil an unidentified concept of its own at the same expo, we can't help but wonder if we won't see this same concept reskinned for upscale export as well.

So there is a real chance that, if the the GS and ES are replaced by one vehicle for the next generation, that vehicle will be RWD like the GS rather than FWD like the ES? My understanding is that the ES outsells the GS many times over. It seems to me that the if you are combining the target customers for those vehicles into one group, you would taylor the product to the preferences of the majority. This makes me skeptical that a car based on the Crown would replace the ES. Should they choose to keep the GS around, then, sure, naturally it would more than likely borrow from the latest Crown. Otherwise, to me, the far more likely choice for an ES/GS replacement is a next generation Avalon-based vehicle.
