I've had to politely ask this same homeless man to move along over 10 times now, 3 times today. What can I do so he won't come back? It's a narrow flight of stairs about 3 feet wide. I would rather not install a gate for now if I can come up with other solutions.

Since a lot of you say call the police, a little insight for those of you that are unfamiliar with the Bay Area; San Fran specifically. Average response time for an officer to show up is about two hours during the day, and maybe an hour at night. He'll have moved by then and will have left plenty of trash for me to pick up.

1/30 Update: This morning when the newspaper was passed out to my doorsteps, he came and tore it all apart and left it on my driveway. Ridiculous...

2/5 Update: He hasn't been back on my doorstep for these past two days, at least I haven't seen him camping. I did drive by and saw him down a couple blocks walking in the direction of my house though. He's a nusiance to many neighbors so I think he may be bothering them for now.

I used to do this to my neighbors house because we had a problem with stray cats at our old house.

Giving him items or money may encourage him to come back wanting more, or the word may spread to others and they may come thinking they'll get the same.

It's a tough call really. If you have a family you can tell him that the family doesn't feel comfortable that there's a stranger around the house.

Sleeping bag or a blanket may be a good idea, but you will have to judge the situation yourself. Considering you have asked 10 times already, your only option at this time is to contact the police.

You could just hook a dollar to a fishing line and make him chase it so far that he forgets his coordinates and takes bunk on someone else's steps.
