PSA for those hit by shopping carts...
Ran to the grocery store for mom the other day as she was making dinner for Father's Day. Discovered a NASTY dent when I got back to their farm and was livid. She informed me that I could go to the store, fill out a form, and they'd pay for the damages. I had no idea they'd do that. 2 days later got a letter in the mail, emailed an estimate and they cut me a check no questions asked. If the actual cost exceeds the estimate they've promised me another check.
Anyway just thought I'd share thinking many, like me, may assume that you're just screwed and have to pay yourself.

Wegmans. Mom did the same at Giant, think all the big stores must do something similar.
Only downside is dad and I can no longer give her shit about the "mystery damage" when she comes back from running errands. Since it happened to me I know at least there's the chance she's actually telling the truth.

It's a good point.
The concept is vicarious liability. The grocery store owns the shopping cart and is therefore vicariously liable for any damage it causes. It's not different than a rental car ... the rental car company can hold you responsible for the damage to the vehicle but cannot pass on their liability for damage you cause to others. |

Thanks for the heads up.
I usually try to park strategically to avoid getting hit - away from cart returns, away from the downhill side of lots, near curbs, etc...
