Dichotomy

Quote:
di·chot·o·my
dīˈkädəmē/
noun
noun: dichotomy; plural noun: dichotomies

a division or contrast between two things that are or are represented as being opposed or entirely different.
I'm going on a 3 day cruise to the Bahamas later this week that will cost me nothing.

I'm spending all 3 days with my entire family on the cruise.

Maybe someone will learn a new word. Of all the things posted in off topic lately, this has to be one of the least interesting.

I would blow my brains out if I have to vacation with my mother and father
Imagine this Everybody Loves Raymond show that's my family house each time I go over.

This is not the correct usage of the word '"dichotomy".
What OP means is "irony", or that he is "conflicted".
A dichotomy is a drawn distinction between things.. while the trip is free, but his experience of it won't be, the only dichotomous relation that exist is between the nature of the trip and his experience of it (which is irony) - thus the use of "dichotomy" is improper as it equivalates subject and verb.
You're welcome.

I've also done a Bahamas cruise with my whole family. It was paid for as well, so yeah, I know how you feel.

I see what you are saying, but I think the dichotomy is between his feeling of joy ( ) at a free trip and his feeling of dread ( ) at being with his whole family. I found his "illustration by emoji" to be very helpful.

@M_Six who is all going? I feel ya on this. I love vacationing with my immediate family - wife/kids - but get into siblings and their kids and I assure you, someone is getting lost at sea.

Had a bucket load of In laws one year come stay for Thanksgiving, including the Mother and Father in law. My kids still remember the phrase I told my wife afterwards...There is not enough Jack Daniels in the world to do that again.

Mom, brother, sister, nephew, and assorted spouses. We rarely have a gathering that goes smoothly. But since this is the first one where we won't be just sitting in someone's house, maybe it'll be better.

And I agree, Grimmy, not a perfect fit for dichotomy. But as jtodd said, it's the dread of going instead of the anticipation.

I guess i'm pretty lucky in that i don't mind the company of my and my wife's family. We all get along, we all enjoy each other's company, we all have fun together. But i'm beginning to realize that isn't the norm.

What is it about other family members that is so horrible?

Not horrible. Just annoying. Sis can be a control freak. Bro can get moody and drop out of all conversation. That sort of thing. Sometimes (most times) the combination turns things sour. Last family gathering didn't go well at all. I'm hoping this one does so any rifts over the last one will be forgotten.

You can't choose your family. You gotta play the hand you were dealt.

Just make sure the cruise is all drinks included and head for one of the bars. I expect frequent updates in the "what are you sipping" thread!

I feel you. You should take kscarrol 's advice and turn it into an OT project. You need to live blog the awesome that it will be!

I do hope they have some decent Scotch choices. We get a $300 shipboard credit, so a bar tab won't be an issue.
