2013 BMW 6 Series catches on fire while parked in the garage.

My cousin is the owner of a 2013 650i convertible. Well he was, until last night. He came home after a quick trip from grabbing some groceries, parked the car in the garage and the next thing he noticed was the smell of something burning. The car caught on fire in his garage and almost burned down the house. Are there any other cases like this involving these vehicles? Would love to hear some peoples thoughts and if there's anything we need to discuss with BMW. The car is totalled.
The car was under warranty, serviced on time, had about 40,000km.

Here are the pictures:

Did he turn off the car after putting it in park?

Wow. That's pretty awesome how all the insulation came off those wires and now they're shiny copper.

He should easily get a new car.

Yes, absolutely.

Even if there's a case where someone leaves the car running while in park for 10-15 minutes, it shouldn't cause this, right?

Right. The car should under no circumstances catch fire while idling in park.

Is this covered under warranty or by his insurance?

Yes insurance covers it. The car was a lease so I'm not sure how that works, but I'm guessing the lease is terminated. Would it be fair to say that BMW should cover all deductibles?

as soon as a leased car is totalled, the lease contract has ended. the insurance pays the diminished value to BMW, the owner needs to do nothing.

not sure about the deductibles though, are there deductibles when the car gets totaled?

I recommend everyone to keep a fire extinguisher in the garage. People think I'm nuts.

This coulda happened to any car though. I saw on the Honda forum I'm on that someone's truck caught on fire in the parking lot while he was running an errand at the grocery store. The dealer determined it was an electrical fire that started near the glovebox.

Wait but shouldn't it be covered under warranty if it's an electrical issue. This is an internal working of the car not some outside force that caused damage to it.

It definitely should be. Who knows if it actually will be though.

fire extinguisher is no good in the garage if the car in the garage is on fire.

extinguisher needs to be outside of the garage so you can get it with out going into the place that is on fire

sorry to hear of the misfortune.

If it was a Tesla, then I am not surprised at all.

What happens if the garage catches on fire and you are in the garage and can't get to the fire extinguisher that is outside of the garage?

well then you need another one in the garage to cover all scenarios.

one outside of the garage and one inside.

or just call the fire brigade and watch all your worldly possessions go up in a blaze of glory!!

Should have two extinguishers. One by the door leading into the house, and one by the garage door.
