Anyone here ever get SMACKED with a crippling financial burdon before? Well, I have.
I am 22 years old and an E-4 in the reserves. I go to school at UMaine and I just got hired at a pretty good job 3 days a week. I work at Vision care of Maine and they are training me to work in the OR. I am a Dental Specialist in the Army so I think they have a pretty decent foundation to build off of considering I am very good with sterilization and what not... ANYways
Spring break just started and on the way home my 1998 Honda Accord LX w/128,000 miles on it. The short of it, the car ran too low on oil... oil light came on (it has before and I just drove to put a couple quarts in and all the lights went off and it ran fine. I was going to do my valve cover gasket when I got home which would end my leaking... Every light went on and the power died. Pulled over and got towed home... Added a few quarts when I got home, it started, idled fine... took it out and I got purring if I drove it with too much throttle so I knew it was bad. The next day I drove 5 miles down the road to try it again anddd it slowly lost power and died again. I need a new motor, and I have no means in the bank... no student loan options, no parents to help etc etc. I found a motor out of a 1999 (f23a1) for $400 bucks and a guy to do it for $500 (flat fee)... I feel really shitty. I don't need it to get to classes and what not... and I MIGHT have a way to get to my job but damn, this hurt bad... |

yeah, that sucks. With a good job you can always get a loan on another car. I got a loan for the car I have independently only about 4 months after I started my first job out of college.
There is always hope. If worse comes to worse you could get a moped... they are cheap with good gas mileage.

Theres the other thing... I have ZERO financial options. I signed power of attorney over to my mother when I left for basic training, AIT and my second MOS school and instead of paying my bills on time she BS'd me and said she had... instead she took my money and paid me back. So for a good while my credit is blown... |

You could try prosper.com...and yeah I lost about $50K last year due to having 2 houses at once right when my major client terminated my contract prematurely...

+1 on that and I raise a broken rocker arm in a Lotus Elise that the manufacturer refuses to cover under warranty. That said, sorry to hear about your problem. Although, you did ask about sudden, crippling financial burdens. Key is do your best to minimize your losses. That's how I got through these issues.

![]() My Elise had two months left on warranty (had it since 3/05), so I really didn't feel it was worth going legal or taking it in the a$$ (though I guess I kinda did). The kicker was I had just spent a few grand on service and mods and I never really got to enjoy them. For instance, the 15K service (glorified oil change) cost me $611, I had just put on a new set of tires at 12K ($1000) and the car was gone at 18K. I had just replaced the brake pads myself with Pagid RS42s ($370 for pads only - dealer wanted $600 for OEM fronts only), installed HIDs myself ($350 - shoulda done that sooner, forgot what I was missing), gotten an ECU reflash ($1200), and decatted the car myself ($280, I installed). For all that effort and expense, I got about 2 months' worth of fun. I'm not cryin' about it, I've made peace with it, but it did suck pretty badly. Loved that car, will probably get another one for grins sometime down the road. To put it in perspective, the 335i's too quiet from what I am used to (I measured 107.1 dBA in the Elise) and, by comparison, the steering is numb and underweighted. Plus, I'm not used to not having to look up at Honda Civics (or anything else for that matter) ![]() |
