Last year I put 14,000 miles on my E24 working full time and attending classes (lots of back and forth trips from work to school). 8 months ago I picked up my E82 and ended up driving it 1,000 miles in the first week of ownership, I wasn't driving to get anywhere specific I would just pick a direction and start driving. Now 8 months later I have clocked 16,000 miles keeping a standing tradition of burning through at least one full tank of gas every weekend. Wherever I drive anywhere I end up turning a 5 mile drive into a 30 mile drive, something that when asked I often attribute to a lack of navigational skill however that is far from the truth.

I honestly have this insane urge to just go out and drive when I have any down time whatsoever (holding it back right now). I really wanted to see how meany of you share a similar addiction to driving and if so what do you do to control or feed that addiction?

I used to be like you. Loved to drive. Used to get up at 2:00a.m.few times a month weekday or weekend and drive back roads for a few hours.
Early on Sunday mornings after a F1 race would go bezerk out in the country.
Then bought a Mercedes and found that high-speed runs on the highway were the only thing that gave a buzz.
Now have a 235 and really want to do the late-night thing but deer are just everywhere. Though the BMW does make even a short drive fun.
Think the final stage of my driving life will be a tiny antique car for fun and just a utility car for essential driving.

Just drove from NC to NOLA. Drive from NC to MI a lot. Drive to work is 57 miles one way.

I'm the same way. Have a 2014 X1 35i and I put 74,000 miles on it already. I've done road rallys, cruises, backroads drives, track days, and am signed up for One Lap of America. Don't care where or why, I just love to drive.

To me, driving is freedom in the middle of my life.

I wake up, do my work as a mom and as a bread provider. I make sure I have what is needed for the kids any given day, take my shopping list and go fetch what's needed before walking the kids to school. From the 8am, my life just goes more and more hectic and there is no stop.

A year and a half ago I learned how to stop again. I took my car and headed out.it was my teenager me as an adult version and I fucking loved it.

To me driving is bliss. It is all the alone time I have in life. Even now, and in my bitching rental diesel Skoda yeti (I'm not buying a car and dogs want forests until we move next month), or the cars that I keep stealing from my friends (rally), I truly appreciate the music, the freedom, any minute I have to be alone.

Next summer I have a big plan, but sadly I doubt I can see it through. The dream still keeps me functioning.

I don't feel the need to drive aimlessly. I load up and take the car to track.

I was in the same situation a few years ago. 55 miles to the office. The commute home on summer days in my Z4 Roadster with the top down and Bob Marley cranking were the best way to unwind. Especially on Fridays.

It's the perfect way to get in the mindset for the day, and the perfect way to unwind after a long day. Just wish it would warm up already.

I'm not at your level of addiction but I can certainly relate. I'm always taking the long way home if I can find a new road I've never driven, all the better. I've never gotten up in the middle of the night just go go driving, but what a great idea. Just watch out for the deer and the drunks.

Since moving north 13+ years ago, I often make the 160-mile round trip to Miami. Love the drive when road is clear but hate the grind once I hit Miami, which seems like it has gotten worse each year. I try to travel off hours, but those also seem to be diminishing more each year, with traffic nearly unavoidable somewhere along the way.

I'm the same way. I would go out and drive just because it's driving. I don't take the long way home though, but I will make up reasons to go somewhere.

Same here, something about driving relaxes me, so when I get bored or stressed, I take my car out for a spin. Sometimes, I tend to put classical music on as well (don't judge haha) the sound of the i6 and the music mix sounds absolutely great.

I managed to put about 5000 miles within the first month and a bit.

That was 9 times for you last year. I need to get out and slide around more frequently than that... like almost every day if I can. Don't get me wrong, I am totally envious of your track days, and I wish there was a decent track around here. I just find it hard to park when coming home, and I find myself extending the drive.

When I lived in Houston, I once put 65k miles on a new car in one year. Everything was so spread out there and no public trans. Now that I'm in the SF Bay area I don't drive much at all. My M3 is probably only going to get about 3,500 miles on it this year.

I have thr same problem. I drive and drive and drive taking the roads with less people on them till i inevitably reach the end. Take a moment to get out admire the view and turn around

Yeah, I sometimes get questions like

"Why do you buy such an expensive car?"

or

"Why do you buy a BMW? a honda civic will do the same job."


Well, they don't have a passion for cars for one, and for those that did, they haven't driven a BMW yet to know why I love driving it so much.

Going from A to B everyday makes it a routine, so I like to break out of it and do a little detour.

So jealous of you guys. Wish I didn't have to work and unlimited gas. I'd head to new England play in the hills.. and then some. The 16 km commute is what wakes me up in the morning and motivates me through the week.

I thailand I drove 8 hours straight sometimes. Not as pleasant than our American roads because of traffic but no actual speed enforcement. ..
