Drive around town with radar detectors?
I was just curious to know if you guys drive around town using your radar detectors consistently? I drive without one. I drive like a hooligan in certain areas but try to stay civil as possible most of the time.

Yes, my escort has saved my butt many times. Getting ready to purchase the Passport Max 360 as soon as the it comes out in another week. This will finally combine the excellent false signal filtering, auto mute, and internal GPS capabilities of the escort and the dual antenna directional arrows of the Valentine. Finally, the best of both worlds in one detector.

Around town, no. Only extended trips on the interstate... As others have noted, too many dangers around town. Local roads are narrow, generally residential neighborhoods with plenty of idiot drivers. Mostly defensive driving around town. I pick my spots out on open roads away from town!

Detector around town is extremely useful if you flagrantly violate the speed limit. Has saved me from cops gunning where I would have missed them otherwise. You need to know how to use the detector and have a good sense of where, and how much speeding you can get away with for best results.

I don't speed around town. I usually don't speed on highways either. Every now and then I go up to 80-85 mph but that's about it. Detectors are handy though for those situations when I need to speed a little. Pays for itself after one ticket saved.

I rarely "speed", but I almost always drive beyond the posted limit, given that it is consistently (and deliberately) set too low. Hence, my radar detector is always on. No driving tax for me.

My Valentine 1 is always on. I probably drive a bit too fast at all times.
Feel it is worth it for a ticket would cost as much or more. It has saved me one or two times the past 6 months. Also like WAZE app. Good stuff. Usually have both on when I moving. Like to play music off my phone so that if there is a cop I hear the warning interrupt the music through waze. |

Mine is on all the time when driving. Where I live, everyone typically drives 5-10 over the limit in certain parts of town (in part because speed limits were lowered by 5 MPH a few years back*). Every six months or so, there is a ticket campaign out of nowhere. Over the past 10 years, I can remember 5 tickets, 3 of which were local (when not using detector), 1 Turnpike from laser and 1 Turnpike from aircraft patrol (which was dismissed in traffic court), so it is really the greatest risk area for me. Since local police use Ka, a detector is particularly helpful.
*Traffic consultant recommended increasing speed limits around town to make them consistent, but the council decided to lower them.

I don't speed either. It's very dangerous and illegal. Hold up, I'm going to need to slow down to finish this reply... Dang it spilt my beer!

I like moving chicanes. ![]() V1 is always on, but the volume is low because of all the frigging Audis in the area. Sooooo many false alarms in town. I'm about to turn the K band off on that dam thing. Anyway, last citation i received from an under cover, (not unmarked) sheriff car and he paced me at 65 in a 45. I was curious as to why this guy was riding my ass for the last mile with no one around. Then we passed the spot where the speed limit dropped from 55 to 45 and the lights came on. Dick.

Always on. It's another instrument in the car and just as much a part of operating it to me as the speedo and tach. I tend to drive as fast as I feel safe driving in any given situation (most of the time that speed is over the posted limit). I don't use "excessive speed" much in town at all anymore (I did when I was a bit younger than I am now), I save that for Toll 130 where the speed limit is 85 MPH (thank GOD I live in TX) and there aren't many cops so I can open her up to "excessive".
