Visitors to Hawaii
Just a heads up that October and November are Tiger Shark pupping season, so the females are aggressive due to higher than normal appetite. In the last two weeks two guys have lost limbs while surfing and swimming. This weekend two Tigers were spotted off Waikiki. Not a big deal and they are always out there, just be forewarned and check with the lifeguards before jumping in...

And the resulting hysteria from the news in the islands about sightings is fun. Was in Maui last week visiting high schools friends, we surfed both Honolua and Slaugtherhouse on Wed & Thurs and the number of people asking us about going in the water was weird. Maybe because we are old and they thought it was some sort of Viking burial or true paranoia about the water? Does the OP know if hammerheads pup at the same time as that activity would be up in Oahu too!

I do think Hammerheads pup this time of year too. Kaneohe Bay would be where most of that activity is. The other variable is there has been a lot of river runoff due to heavy rain recently which contributes to the condition.

That's the exact area I was thinking of.
And yes lots of brown water on the west side of Maui, Slaughterhouse in particular had some dirty water from run off but I was not passing since I only get over there once a year. Could not believe how hot and humid this late in the year it was as well. |

Yeah Makaha is still heavily guarded by the local surfers and community but you know what its a good thing. The 10 year old kid that was bitten was immediately helped by the guys in the water. I saw a photo of the wound, probably 50 - 60 stiches. He could have easily went into shock and bled to death or drowned. I remember years ago when I was a kid a family friend from a local Hawaiian family telling us that when the Wiliwili trees dropped their seeds to stay out of the water. Last week I was in Kapolei and walked past a row of Wiliwili, seeds all over the ground. The Hawaiians know.

West side is awesome. Not going to lie... Thought I'd be hated on when camping and beach going over there. I was way wrong!! People out on the west side are more friendly then anywhere on the island! Love it out there. Just don't be stupid and respect it and the locals will respect you.
