Saw this yesterday. It's amazing how far tuning has gr I wn over the last 2+ decades. It's also amazing how the companies like BMW lock down their ecu's to prevent anyone tuning the car besides themselves. Can't blame them tho, they are in the business of selling cars and making money, not fixing warrantied cars with hacked ecu's. Good thing we have very smart vendors who can figure that stuff out and share it with the community.

Actually what Steve admits is piggy backs in the future won't work as once stock ECUs are tricked out of parameters they wont work at all well, dtmal will result and error codes will be produced. This means DINAN will need to go the remap route sooner or later. Be good to see DINAN return to real tuning.

Yeah for almost a year now GSR and Enzo have been flashing. I had Enzo tune my ECU and I can't believe how awesome it is sometimes.

Perhaps Dinan has finally figured it out or purchased the knowledge to flash finally but glad that more people are flashing the f30 now.

The way he was able to break down the concepts into such clear layman terms is amazing! Although his comments have me wondering... does every little change connected to the drive train technically require a re-tune? ie changing the stock cat to a high flow cat or catless would alter the exhaust flow. Does that technically require a tailored re-tune?

I have been a Dinan customer and fan since 1996,

After I purchased my first BMW which was a brand new 1995 E36 325iC, a Dinan chip (back then) was my first mod and it was excellent.

It is a pleasure to listen to master talk about his craft. Steve Dinan is BMW tuning legend!!!!!

Always great to hear from Dinan! And glad I never "just plugged in" one of those jump boxes.

I like the idea of Dinan parts but, their BMW match warranty is shady and has a lot of fine print to say the least. On my last 335, getting warranty work done due to Dinan tune (blowing cool packs and eating spark plugs) was a pain in the ass. It was eventually fixed so that was good but I'd be hard pressed to pay for such minimal gains.

Dinan tunes aren't aggressive enough, their suspension is good but can easily be matched with way less expensive high quality parts. I'm just not that into this company any more. Cut your prices down Dinan and you'll do better

Although the /engineered series has shown a few knowledgeable people. I found Steve Dinan to be the most entertaining and the best at making what he talked about fun and interesting. I showed the video to my brother in law, an aspiring 1 months old mechanic. He's was glued to the vid.

I was curious about the warranty process through Dinan.
Figured it wouldn't be "easy", but at least it gives you peace of mind. Good to know they got you taken care of.

Stage 2 for the F80/F82 seems appealing to me at 520hp/500tq. $2,799, though? I guess you pay to play anywhere you go.

Let me at least say that on my previous car, an F10 M5, my fuel pump, injectors and turbos were replaced. No tune done to car. If I had any tune on the car, they COULD have probable cause to blame failure on the tune and I would have been out thousands of dollars. The benefit of the Dinan "warranty" at retail far exceeds the opportunity cost of having engine failure. I would probably shell out the money if I decided I needed more power.

IMO, since the dealers are retailing the Dinan product, the DEALER should warranty the labor and then pursue Dinan for reimbursement. There should no BS passed to the customer...If the dealer experiences problems with Dinan, they should drop their product. Pretty simple. I also understand from Dinan's perspective, they don't want to warranty labor/parts if the customer has additionally modified the vehicle. The main relationship is the dealer and Dinan, the customer, if honest, should be the first person to be taken care of.

I definitely am going to do more research on this before I pull the trigger.

Just my $.02.

Lane

Awesome vid, I agree.

It's obvious that Steve is very intelligent.

This is I think already the case on some ecu's.
I had on my first tune from the ESS TS2 kit on high altitude the code popping up that 'actual torque' gave an 'implausible value' according to INPA.
P code description was "Control module self test. Torque monitoring current indicated value plausibility"
Obviously there is no torque sensor present, so that is a calculation from various input signals/sensors. Just as he describes in the video. So that is connected to some sort of mapping with values and the ecu sees that that is getting out of specs.
And this is on a +10 years old ecu.
Those values probably will be set tighter and tighter as the ability and accuracy to monitor and calculate values gets better and better.
That's why you probably see all high power builds that give double the horsepower or more all run on aftermarket ecu's. Not only do they give better control as everything is nicely documented, it's getting more difficult to find all mappings and other safetyfeatures in a modern ecu and hack them out.
