Need a reliable SUV...
So I have the X5 right now, and although it's doing its job just fine, this is not a vehicle I'd ever own out of warranty. And I'm not someone who switches cars very often, so once the X5 no longer has warranty, I want to buy an SUV that I can own carefree, rack up the miles on, and not have to worry about something expensive breaking.
What does everyone think of the LX 570? Seems big enough, based on the Land Cruiser and it's something I think I can mess bit with a bit. Anything else I should look at? |

If an LX470 isn't too big, a Suburban/Escalade/Tahoe, etc sure seems better.
A friend who's a mechanic has said that Land Cruisers are the one Japanese car that match or exceed Germans in maintenance cost. |

The nobrainer is a 4runner, easily see those do 200-300k miles-
and there are some packages with leather and what not that could make it closer to lexus luxury... |

I've heard good things about the new XC90, although it's too early for reliability reports. There were a few posts here by people who jumped to the Volvo from X5s with no regrets.

like mentioned previous seems like people who know buy the Sequoia w/o the electronic modulated air suspension system. The land cruiser/ lexus electronic suspension will need repair out of warranty.
Obviously you have to test drive, but the 2016 Honda Pilot - check it out because for a starting price of $32000 ( inventory is low since Pilot is just hitting showrooms ) it feels like a great buy. |

How about a CPO X5? I just picked up a '13 with 20k miles and a 6yr 100k mile CPO warranty. There are lots out there.

To be honest, I'm a fan of the 2016+ Ford Explorer Sport.
It rides well for an SUV its size. It's not too expensive. And it has decent passing power with the Ecoboost V6. It also has been thoroughly tested since it's used a severe duty fleet vehicle. |

We have a 2001 Explorer Sport right now and even though it's probably for $200, I have a hard time letting go of it. It just keeps running, and it doesn't cost me anything but fuel and basic maintenance. I take it most of the time over my X5 since it's just a "slap it in D and go" type of car.

My SUV of choice is a Macan S. True it is quite a bit smaller than the X5 but for a sporty, luxurious SUV it covers the bases. And being a Porsche it should be quite reliable (find a CPO'd one and you're set).
I shy away from Lexus. Plush ride but the infotainment system is garbage and they are bland looking in my opinion. It also lacks the sportyness of an X5. That being said a Lexus is a trooper and would be problem free. Good luck in your search!

Porsche being reliable is just a perception, not a fact. Not to mention, the guy wants out of X5 due to costs and we guide him to a more expensive brand. In regards with the X5 I don't see them as unreliable, not sure about the new one, but I know several that are 8-10 years, one in my family, that run without any issue. The closest that I know never had a problem except usual stuff. However, if I need to pick something out of the german ring it will probably be a Honda or Toyota, or even an Explorer. Ford came a long way too, except the resale value is not the same. |

I should also add that I'm looking to buy used, and I don't care if it has between 40K and 50K miles on it already. If it's reliable, then the miles should not matter. More concerned about it being clean.
Budget is between 40K and 45K... |

My parents are Toyota people and each car has gone 200+ with only semi-regular oil changes. Our 4Runner was just donated with over 340k on the clock. It was also only on its second set of brake pads (because the factory set was too old, not worn). Truly amazing vehicles but I hate the design of the new generation.
Lexus makes a 4Runner-based vehicle, the GX. Worth taking a look.

Honestly, the most reliable car I ever owned was a 2001 Lincoln Navigator. The car had almost 200k miles when we let it go and the only maintenance issues we ever had were replacing the airbag suspension (less than $1k for all four) and COP's. A good friend of mine has a 2000 Eddie Bauer Expedition with close to 300k miles and the maintenance has been even less. Food for thought if you really want to have a low cost and maintenance car.

Personally, I couldn't go from a BMW to a Honda, Toyota or the like. So much about owning a car for me is the driving experience.
