OT: Fake exhaust pipes?

Nope. Just nope.

With the active sound crap and all, I hope BMW doesn't start entering this trend.

For sure - that is awful! Right up there with non-functioning hood scoops.

I dont even know why they are doing this because it's so ugly.

I hear you about the hood scoop.

Add to that the fake side vents.

Mercedes C Class Diesel exhausts are also fake. They are called Vanity Panels.

I'll probably earn a lifetime ban for this but, functional or not, I think it looks better than two chrome pipes sticking out the back - that setup reminds me of a 1950 Chevy with a split manifold exhaust system.

While mentioning fake hood scoops and side vents, don't forget the BMW fake sound system - you have to spread the wealth to be fair you know.

I dunno. It does look "good" to my symmetrically ideal eyes.....but then, it does NOT look good from a design and visual standpoint. I mean it's not horrible, but I don't "like" it either.

The fact that it's fake makes it worse. I mean arguing that a 4 cylinder doesn't need dual (or quad) pipes is one thing when they are real.....putting FAKE dual exhausts on ...........just no.

Just saw the release of the new A4 from Audi and they ruined the interior, the rise of ridiculous hybrids, fake noise generators........I can see that very, very soon I will be unable to find a new car I would pay for and I will have to start scrounging the used market for those great cars of the past.

I have to agree with your statement. The symmetry is good, but they're fake.

Kind of like fake "portholes" from AutoZone... lol

Having spent some years as a designer, I think it might have been more palatable and visually pleasing if they had made the exhaust a "center" exit location rather than trying to balance things and make it look like something it's not - just my opinion.

MotorTrend has a pic of what appears to be a C-class with fake exhaust pipes on the passenger side. They connect to a piece of pipe that follows the bumper cover line..just to balance the look out. Ugh.

Too late, just take a look at the F10 550i

EDIT : Looked closer and saw that the actual tips on the VW are non functional. Still, these aren't the most legitimate looking things, are they?

Banned... On my 3rd x35 car and love the pipes just sticking out and getting covered in soot when I hammer it.

I like the Buick portholes on the Mazda. I think I'll get a set for my M-Sport. Something different to stand out in the crowd.

If I had it my way, that comment wouldn't just ban you for life, but Bimmerpost would send you to a fiery hell where you would have to drive a 1986 Hyundai Excel 150 miles each way to your work to pleasure BMW engineers... As a cook, of course.

Those aren't fake, they're just integrated pipes. Fake pipes, as you noticed, are nonfunctional ones that are purely cosmetic. Seeing as that VW is not even an electric car why they went with fake pipes is confusing to say the least.
