Buying a Watch Online
So my dad is retiring this coming Sept and I wanted to buy him a a Rolex as a gift. I've seen what seem to be decent deals on Amazon and TouchofModern but I wanted to see what peoples takes/opinions/suggestions are of buying a nice watch online. I'm pretty certain that I'll stay far away from the eBay route, but I'd open to suggestions.
TIA

Does it have to be brand new? If not, then I would recommend watchrecon.com. It was recommended to me by a few members here and I used it to buy my Omega Seamaster.

Go to Rolexforums.com and look in the classifieds. Tons of reputable sellers there selling new/used pieces.

I guess as long as it has papers and looks clean brand new doesn't matter too much. I'll check out the forums.

Go to a Certified Rolex dealer and buy it through them.
It's a gift so do it right. Inspect it at the store in it's original shipping packaging. And That's a great gift. |

I dont know what touch of modern is, but you cant buy a Rolex on Amazon. Only AD are authorized to sell Rolex, unless its used in which case I doubt you would find it on Amazon. people dont go to Amazon to sell Rolex watches used.
anyways, I bought my Expy II from Ebay and had no issues. for every thousand authentic Rolex watches on Ebay there might be one fake one, and it will get pulled after a few hours almost gauranteed. alternatives are Bobs Watches and as someone suggested TRF classifieds. |

Watchrecon is good for searching watch forums for deals on some new and used watches.
Other places like Jomashop will have good deals on some new watches but they are grey market goods so there is no manufacturer warranty on them. Otherwise the watch themselves are fine.

The sales corner at Watchuseek is excellent for watches of every brand and for highly rated sellers too. It's well worth a look > http://forums.watchuseek.com/forum.php#sales-corners

I purchased a mint 1994 Tudor Big Block on watchrecon and would recommend it to anyone. I also bought a Vacheron Constantin Overseas Chrono from capetownstore.com They stock Rolex as well and I would recommend them to you too. Another great site is www.timeofswitzerland.com, their prices aren't listed but if you click on send you'll get a quote asap. The Euro is down against the dollar and now may be the time to buy. Nice gift!

First of all I want to say what a thoughtful son you are, he obviously did a great job raising you!
I would recommend Jomawatch.com, I have never personally bought a watch from them but have had many close friends who have and got great deals. Good luck

Truly, so long as I don't have authenticity or state of repair concerns, I'd buy a Rolex from just about any seller. I don't know of a compelling case for why I should not buy a Rolex from Jomashop other than that they may, at the time I'm shopping, charge more than another seller.
All the best.
