Not sure; I think it depends on the gear ratios. However, it seems that the auto mfgr's are moving toward more gears...it used to be 4, then 5, and now the std. auto has 6 gears with 7 and 8 now on some lux. cars. My wife's MB GL450 has a 7-speed auto tranny as well; 7th gear overdrive is only engages above 65mph on the highway.

Yea, 4 speed autos are obsolete now I believe except on some ultra-economy cars. Most makes now have 5 speeds standard and the luxurious brands have 6 speeds standard with 7 speed exclusive to mercedes and 8 speed to lexus

they do more gears so you can make the lower gears shorter and the higher gears very long, aids in maximum acceleration from a standstill and maximum efficiency at cruising.

I understand the concept, but at what point do you trade gearing advantage for the number of shifts it takes? Is it 6,7,8....15? I don't know, but I can see a point at which adding gears actually reduces performance...which I thought was part of the reason CVT's were developed.

The higher the Horsepower is in the rev range, the more gears desirable.

It says right in the article I posted...

..."The new M double-clutch transmission with Drivelogic shifts gears without the slightest interruption in the flow of power, thus promoting both the sports driving experience and gearshift comfort for the driver. In its gearshift characteristics, the new M double-clutch transmission with Drivelogic is ideally matched to the fast-revving V8 power unit in the new BMW M3. Making its debut on the same occasion in the BMW M3 Coupé, the BMW M3 Saloon and the BMW M3 Convertible, the new transmission helps to provide even faster and more dynamic acceleration."

So, how much more do you have to pay for this transmission, over the manual?

Is the price out yet?

Remove the efficiency part at least BMW usually gears their cars to speed regardless.

That's the whole point, its a DCT transmission, there is no disadvantage to having tons of shifts, they are faster than instant, there is no off power.

That's one way of putting it I guess, In a car like ours it would be kind of dumb to have a gearbox keeping us between 6-7k all the time.
