Because you need more ///M logos to differentiate between the ///M Sport models and the true ///M cars - once you count them up, there will be no confusion as to what the car is.

I thought the number of M logos matched the model, 80 for the M3, 82 for M4 etc.

I am disappoint it wasn't!
