Poll: Cheap or Pricey ties?
Better to buy cheap (<$50) or pricier (>$75) ties. And why?

Don't wear ties. They restrict creative thinking. ...............they make you old.

I have a wide range of ties. I'm firmly in the "if you like it, buy it" camp. I have about half that are $180-$220 and another half that are <$70. The two ties that I get the most compliments on are a checkered Charvet ($210) and a navy with white polkadots which was free from Charles Tyrwhitt. This proves that you don't have to spend a ton of money to dress very nicely.
Same with my suits - I get most of them at the Theory outlet. Great fit, comfortable materials, complimented regularly. Funny story. When I first started working at my firm, I was talking to our chief council and he said "hey, that's a really nice tie!". I said "thanks, I got it for $7". He looked like he was going to throw up in his mouth. He was one of those "it's $200 or it's garbage" types.

I tend to pick up my ties at Off 5th of Last Call. The $225 ties are generally around $80.
So just because MSRP is up doesn't mean you can't find what you want/like at a good price that fits your budget. |

Most complimented tie for me is a blue checkered Burberry tie. It's subtle but anyone that has a clue about fashion knows that its Burberry. Still only about $130

Burberry ties always seem to be worn by the "I only have one nice outfit" or "this is my only tie" types. I have never seen one in a corporate setting, only at weddings or similar functions.

I have all sorts of ties.
Those $9.99 Target Loony Toon ties from 1990s to all sorts. Loony toon ties are one of the best intimidation ties ever. It shows the statement that "you can't wear it, but I can"

I'm reading that knit ties can be fashionable if worn with the right shirt/jacket. Should have kept the ones I had from the 80's.

I wore exclusively Brioni or Charvet forever but recently picked up a few at Suit Supply. Gotta say, pretty damn impressed especially for the $. Been buying my clothes there for a few years, glad I gave the ties a shot.

I refuse to Fuk with cheap rubber on my chariots.
I've had sooooo many aftermarket wheels on several different cats over the years and have personally heard from shop owners or chain tire stores, the stories of premature wear, noise, or even failure from cheap tires. Now that's not to say one must buy the most expensive tires available! But I'd definitely sick with name brand top tier brands. |
