So I was having an interesting conversation with someone the other day, and I'm kind of curious as to what everyone else used to get into in their younger years to keep themselves occupied. We had quite a few games that we would play with large groups of people, and it really makes me miss having fun like that.

Some shenanigans we used to partake in;

Scavenger hunts: Usually with less than typical tasks, like eating a live goldfish, streaking through a golf course, towing someone on a skateboard, getting lit up with a paintball gun, etc. It would usually last about 4 hours, starting at any time of the day or night, comprised of 5 teams with 3 to 4 people per team, with a camera to document accomplished tasks. We would constantly hang out in the basement, conspiring new tasks with different points based on the extremity of said task.

The winning team got their team name put on an old spelling bee trophy with a volleyball player on top.


Kidnapped: Same instance, about 5 teams comprised of 3 people. 1 person was kidnapped by another team, and the other two people are a driver and the other a navigator. You would get 30 minutes to drive as far away, and in as complicating of a region as you can find, making it difficult for the kidnapped, whom is blindfolded, to know where they are. Being this was a time where flip phones had just been invented, there was no such thing as mapquest, just ingenuity. The first team to locate their kidnapped team mate and bring them back to home base was the winner.

The prize was the glorified trophy made from aluminum foil that could be proudly represented until the next team took it over.

We did scavenger hunts as well. Lots of fun. I'll have to look into some statutes of limitations before posting up further details.

Harassing the security guard at the industrial park just over the town line from our neighborhood. He'd sit in a brightly lit hut in the middle of a parking lot. We'd low crawl up to it and tape a wad of firecrackers rolled up in paper towel to the side of his hut and light it, then scramble back into the woods. When the flame from the paper towel got up to his windows, he'd notice it and come running outside right as the firecrackers went off.

To this day I'm amazed none of us got shot.

Mostly we played sports. There were enough kids my age in our neighborhood to to have a decent baseball, football, or street hockey game. We always had some game going.

This is priceless. Nothing more gratifying than messing with someone in uniform! He probably hated you guys, and it sounds totally worth it.

Makes me think about the neighborhood girls we used to mess with.

Our group of dudes lived in the same subdivision as the group of girls. Well, we would set up a tent community in his backyard, so obviously we would stay up through the wee hours of the night getting into mischief.

When the girls had their little sleep overs, we would do just about anything to create a ruckus in front of the house. Put caution tape across the street making a back up in front of their house, lighting off fireworks in the back pond, saran wrapping the house, etc.

They would retaliate and shove thousands of plastic forks and knives in the lawn around our tents, take a bunch of feminie pads and stick them all over the house/cars/tents, bedazzled our tail lights so when we got in we wouldn't see them glistening.

Used to build a hockey rink in my friends back yard every winter. Every year we would improve on it till eventually it had boards all the way around with tall boards on each end with netting even higher. Lights strung across for night play. One of the last years we even videotaped games. Would like to see one of those videos but i'm sure they're long gone. Built a wiffleball field too for the summer. Later on when we got our DL's we would play bumper tag in our cars on slippery roads. Not the brightest idea.

Spinning tops! I spent countless hours wrapping that string around that wooden top and watching it wiz across the floor.

My other favorite was Skully. We would pour wax inside the caps for greater distance and knock the hell out of your opponent.

This meant something else when we were younger

We used to play tackle football at the park from teen years to early 20's. Some of the best bro times ever. As we aged, friends got married, had families and priorities changed.

We tried to all get together and ignite our football games recently and two guys sprained their ankles, most were out of shape and slow LOL.

My friends and I used to fill an old purse with dog crap and maybe put an old wallet or something inside, full of dog crap. We would usually have a dollar sticking out the top of it. We would put it on the side of the road and watch cars stop and pick it up and drive off. They would usually throw it out pretty quickly so we'd pick it up and wait for the next car.

There was this big furniture store that had a showroom fronted by the warehouse. It seemed like it was at least 1000 feet to the top of the racks, with everything from tables and chairs, to recliners and couches. We'd get together and go over there and play hide-seek, but you couldn't touch the floor if you were hiding.

How any of us is still alive today I can't tell you. Jump across the aisles from one level to the other, landing on couches, using the picker in the hydraulic lift as a cover both visual and auditory. Spidey didn't have nothing on us, we didn't need web.

kickball, anyone know a game called butts up? maybe it's a new england thing but you throw a ball at the wall and try to catch it , if the ball touches you without you catching it you have to run and touch the wall before someone whips the ball at you. There were railroad tracks behind the dead end street that I lived on and me and the neighborhood kids would hop on the train and hop back off . We built a some forts behind there too. This was anywhere from 3rd grade to 6th. I got into skateboarding bikes in the 7th grade and stopped playing with the neighborhood kids. We would ride all over town from one end to the other looking for crab apples to steal.

Butts up was awesome. Although, some people I knew could throw a tennis ball pretty hard. I didn't know that was a game that other people knew about.
