Even more amazing is how much you notice how the 1000lbs of metal from the engine and transmission impacts driving/handling when you get used to an EV, then go back to ICE.

Distributing that weight to the floor is way more noticeable to driving performance than any improvement such as replacing a standard glass sunroof with carbon fiber. If BMW was really all about the performance/driving, they would have already switched to dedicated EV platforms for their performance cars.

They probably chose the battery size based on a mix of things. A car like this is going to get good range with less battery compared to the iX, so they can afford not to put a gargantuan battery in and save some weight, try to maintain some driving dynamics.

With the batteries under the floor there must be one of these outcomes or possibly a mixture of all 3?

Less leg room height
Less ground clearance
Higher overall vehicle height

From BMW press - the overall height then ground clearance:
1515mm 146mm i5 edrive40
1505mm 136mm i5 M60 - this would imply the suspension is 10mm lower
1515mm 154mm 520i and 520d

So this would imply that the battery sticks down about 10mm more than a normal petrol car would.

Unfortunately the press release doesn't list leg room but I'm guessing that some is lost with the i5 versions.
