Does the 540xi have a spare tire?

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
I thought it did but when I pulled up the floor of the trunk, this is what I found. I found it odd that there was no latch or hand cutout to grip the trunk floor to allow the owner to lift it to get to the spare tire. I got it up anyway and all I see under there is what looks like a complex battery. My sales advisor indicated that the car comes with a donut spare but if it does I have no idea where it would be.

Any 540 owners have any insight into whether these cars come with a spare?

The bag in the left of trunk looks like a tire inflation kit. I have it on good authority though that BMW road side assistance is excellent in our area and is mostly provided by our dealership, Habberstad.

If you have ordered a spare tire, it looks like this:

So there is no spare then, am I correct?

If you checked the option called "mobility kit" that automatically deleted spare tire in your trunk. Instead they gave you the kit.

I don't have the mobility kit. I have a spare tire in the trunk (donut to be exact).

Wow, I wish I had known that. I would have opted for the donut spare. Ughhh.

I hope BMW roadside assistance is good when and if I need it.

If I verify with the genius line on Monday, that the only thing that prevented me from getting a space saver spare was the inadvertent checking of the "mobility kit" box which was recommended by my CA as "it's free, why not" I'm going to be pursuing a resolution to this matter.
Beyond this, WTF is BMW thinking to even sell a car with regular tires without any form of a spare? That, in itself, is absolutely outrageous. When they were selling cars exclusively with RFT's this may have made sense. With regular tires this borders on negligence.

I know it’s not BMW, but my Acura that I just turned in had regular tires and no spare. Just their version of the mobility kit.

the 2023 X1 for the US has non-runflat tires and a temporary spare tire.

the 2023 X1 for Canada, just across the border, has non-runflat tires and no spare tire at all(only a mobility kit)

BMW logic... well... I've pretty much stopped trying to understand their logic.

I ordered the mobility kit. No spare.

When you did order the mobility kit, did your CA tell you this would delete the spare? Were you aware that you had an option to get the spare by passing on the mobility kit?

Yes, it did. And I passed on the spare.

I am not a fan of this solution either. It's a roulette that I would never wanna play.

For what's worth it, maybe you can retrofit that "cartridge" with the spare. I vaguely recall a thread in the G30 forum on this topic (I had the spare in the LCI). Alternatively, and for peace of mind, you can always switch to RFTs. If I am to be honest RFTs of today are not what they used to be 10 years ago. They are just fine and don't bubble as easily.

This practice is actually not unprecedented. Most new\modern M cars (if not all) do not offer a spare and they do not come with RFTs. If something happens it's either a flat bed or that mobility kit.

This situation may be acceptable to some, but not to me. My issue is not so much that the "mobility kit" option removes the spare, but that I was never made aware of this so that I could make an informed decision. We count on our CA's to know their products and guide us through the ordering process properly. This was not the case here. In fact, if I confirm the above on Monday it's of note that my CA still maintains that getting a spare with this car was not (and is not) possible. I believe that is inaccurate and, if so, I'll be demanding that this oversight/negligence be resolved in some way which I'll find to be acceptable.

Hi OP: There is a small information note that has to be clicked on to see that checking the kit will negate the spare.

The sales rep should have confirmed that this would happen. Maybe they could retro fit one for you? It does take up space in the trunk, but I have had to use mine twice. Keep us posted!

If you decided you want a spare you should be able to order the piece it sits in as well.

I do know that you are able to take that price out of the car to get a bit more trunk space if needed so there is no reason you shouldn’t be able to add it.

I turned in my Jaguar and found out it had a full size spare tire. I never lifted up the trunk liner to check. It would’ve been handy when I had a flat,

You should pursue this with the dealer to offer you the spare as a replacement part - along with the jack, toe hook, wheel chalk and the carpeted insert that holds all of it - at a greatly reduced price to you. This was a factory option on the G30 (~$150) as well as a replacement part later (~$350). Should be the same for the G60. The trunk floor is the same so that part just sits on top of the spare tire insert.

As mentioned by COBodom, M cars have had only the Mobility kit since the mid-2000's if not longer. My E90 M3 only had the M Mobility kit, no spare, and in 72k miles and nearly 7 years of ownership I never needed it. Even tracking the car and taking it on long roadtrips. Guess I was lucky, but after a while the anxiety of having only the mobility kit goes away.

I've expressed my outrage about this entire matter with my CA, the sales manager of the dealership and the general manager and they have agreed to provide me with the limited use spare, jack and hazard triangles at no cost. The only downside is that I'll have to carry them in the trunk rather than under it as the car can't be retrofitted to the configuration that would have had this under the trunk floor. But I feel this resolution is acceptable. I am none too happy with my CA, however and will never deal with him again. I understand that no one is perfect and that mistakes can be made but I deeply resent doubling down on those mistakes when they're brought to your attention. This is just completely unacceptable and this was made clear to all concerned. Everyone in my family is a lawyer and I was fully prepared to sue them had this not been resolved in a manner that I felt was fair.

You technically get more trunk space lugging them around your trunk like that, because the standard spare comes with fitting that robs you of trunk space, much like the G30 spare tire: https://www.getbmwparts.com/p-g30-5-...set-pkg30spare

If you really insist, you can probably buy the fitting too, but on the G30, it only comes as a set, so you might have to pay for the set also.

Also, sue them for what? What laws did they violate? Because they didn't tell you that choosing the mobility kit deletes the spare? Good luck with that.

The dealership and its employees have a responsibility to provide customers with accurate information. This did not happen here. As a result of having been misinformed I purchased a vehicle that was not outfitted as it could have been had I received the appropriate information. That constitutes a damage and one that I have no doubt would have been sustained in court. As it turns out, we'll never have to find out what the outcome would have been because the dealership proposed a solution that I find to be reasonable.
