Can someone tell me what this means?

On the nav map there are areas that show up as dark blue but I have no idea what this is meant to indicate.

Any ideas?

Seems you activated the mode that helps you finding available parking. Those are parking spots.

Perhaps it's like Waze in the sense of crowd sourcing. As the cameras of all current and recent BMW's are always active maybe open parking spots which are identified get fed back into the BMW database and are then made available to any other BMW drivers who's navigation destination is in that area.

Just a guess...

From the navigation manual, page 20:

“When parking information is available for the surrounding area of the destination, a message with parking suggestions is displayed just before the destination is reached.

Depending on the equipment, colored lines indicate areas with parking possibilities along the street. The more visible the lines, the greater the probability of finding a parking space.”

There are a bunch of internet connected parking meters and such installed in various cities today, it wouldn’t surprise me if the free/occupied data is not available to be monetized to provide services like this.
