"Steering Wheel Impulse" won't turn on/"Lane Guiding with Navigation"

Just got my car--not much seat time, but love it so far.

Can't figure something out, though.

Under the settings for steering wheel feedback, there's an option for "steering wheel impulse." It won't let me turn it on. It says "Activate Lane Guiding with Navigation." I don't see any place to do that. And what is steering wheel impulse anyway?

Thanks.

If it's anything like the G30 it may be a feature that gently vibrates the steering wheel when you cross lane lines.

Just a guess.

Congratulations on getting your car!

Alright... Ready? I had to RTFM to make sure my facts were straight.

It turns out I understood "steering wheel vibration" correctly, but that I was not familiar with "steering wheel impulse". That's good, since I wanted not to get them mixed up.

I. Steering wheel vibration applies to Lane Departure Warning, Side collision mitigation, and Assisted Driving. Per the owner's manual,
Setting the intensity of the steering wheel vibration

1. Apps menu
2. "Vehicle"
3. "Driving settings"
4. "Driver Assistance"
5. "Feedback via steering wheel"
6. "Vibration intensity"
7. Select the desired setting.

This setting is applied to all collision warning systems.

II. Steering wheel impulse applies to only Lane change with active guidance. Per the owner's manual,
Lane change with active guidance

Principle

Lane change with active guidance assists the driver when lane changes are necessary to reach a destination. A notice is also displayed on the instrument cluster. In addition, a slight jerk can be felt on the steering wheel.

Switching lane change on/off with active destination guidance

1. Apps menu
2. "Vehicle"
3. "Driving settings"
4. "Driver Assistance"
5. "Driving"
6. "Route and intersection assistant"
7. "Lane Guiding with Navigation"

Switching the steering wheel jerk on/off

You can switch the steering wheel jerk assistance on/off.

1. Apps menu
2. "Vehicle"
3. "Driving settings"
4. "Driver Assistance"
5. "Driving"
6. "Route and intersection assistant"
7. "Steering wheel impulse"
So, apparently "a slight jerk... felt on the steering wheel" is synonymous with "Steering wheel impulse".

Clear as mud, right? Thanks Trivalent. My dealer did not even know what they were talking about.

I’ll take a look tomorrow and see if I can find that on the menus. Learning iDrive all over again.

“Steering wheel jerk assistance” is certainly a more direct way of saying “driver assist” I guess. Perhaps something’s lost in the translation.

You got it, Mike. In my experience, the dealers can't keep up with the proliferation of features and related terminology.

Across brands, salespeople have told me that I know more about their cars than they do. To me that doesn't necessarily mean that they don't know their product; rather that rarely anyone but a car owner would devote themselves to learning the depth of each model's features and settings.

In the BMW universe, the Geniuses are supposed to have that knowledge. But when I was taking delivery of my i4, the Genius helping me with its setup told me the same, that I knew more about i4 than he did.

Today, when I phoned the genius line there was a new option for electric or hybrid cars. Maybe they are getting people trained now.

Garage List
Just a reminder to everyone that there is a searchable electronic copy of the manual in this forum, so if you run into something you don't understand, you may be able to search for some of the terms and get a quick answer. Maybe.
