Do You Really Need EV-Specific Tires? | Tire Rack

Road Trip posted this excellent summary in the iX forum that is a great overview of tire selection for EV’s, and how those choices impact performance and efficiency

Full disclosure I am a user of TireRack, in fact using their on line free research in choosing the new tires that I right away put on our iX M60 (Michelin PS A/S 4’s) and used TR in choosing the tires for our previous plug in. I use their one line research and also at times direct buy from them.

This also got me thinking about our discussions over here about different OEM tire specs.

deutsch100 you seem to be the king of the efficiency heap for m60’s (!) curious what tires/rims you’ve got? I’m running the 20” 940M wheels with Hankook Ventus S1 AS tires.

Interesting that rain affects range. I’m always driving in the rain except for summer. I ordered all season for those conditions and was issued Pirelli PZero non-EV specific. I’m probably going to keep these on for the summer to compare range, though I normally switch to summer tires.

My M60 came with what looks like non-EV Pirelli 20" P Zero All Season NonRFT.

My rims are 20" Bicolor JetBl 940M AS

Duly noted! Might need to give those a go when my Hankook’s wear out. Was wondering what else might be behind your stellar range, perhaps they secretly gave you a Neue Klasse battery pack without telling you

LOL! I am not a heavy accelerator, I coast to red lights and I try to keep freeway speeds under 75mph if I can. I precondition for every drive when the weather is cool or cold.

I also got many 400 mile range trips in my iX too. And my i3S...I would get close to 150 miles on that tiny battery. EVs love me

Are you in So Cal with warmer weather? I’m only getting about 225 with the cold and rain with the same wheels and tires.

Yeah. I am in Calabasas, which is in western L.A. County. Dec, Jan and Feb...we have many cold mornings (30s & 40s F), but our daytime highs are usually quite warm, if not brutally hot (triple digits are common for several months cumulatively each year).

I'm in the Los Angeles area too and plan to precondition all the time in the summer. It gets to 100 degrees F here sometimes so the preconditioning will probably be important to cool down that battery in the summer.
