For those who feel that losing a stick for an automatic transmission car makes a any car less sporty, please refer to Ferrari, McLaren, or lamborghinis not as sports cars because they all lack a stick…

It has a functional purpose when your hands aren’t at 9 and 3 and you aren’t letting the car do the shifting for you.

Interestingly enough you left Porsche out of the “sports cars” category, you say back in the day as if manufacturers have ceased to make manuals.

You may like the removal of it and that’s fine for you. The day we “evolve” into manual gearboxed Porshces plummeting in price compared to their PDK variants then your statement will have some merit to it.

The stick is also useful to put the gearbox in a sportmode, you can do this without having to look .

People acting like the shift lever is a manual that BMW is taking away from them. It’s still an automatic

I can do this by programming M1 or M2 button. Don’t have to look to press.

Since the G90 comes out before that, it retains iDrive 8.5 (the "old" tech). I'm sure there will be M-specific features to Panoramic Vision once we see it in the G90 and other M products.

The manual gearbox will die in my lifetime…..there I said it here today…remember when Porsche said they would not make a hybrid 911? It’s here soon. Times change, and one day we will see an all electric 911 (blasphemy)….and people will still buy them!

Also, for the record, everyone who is worried about performance for this using the hybrid powertrain from the XM label, You have nothing to worry about. This will be a proper sports sedan. Unless you have driven a car with this new powertrain, please wait for the actual reviews. I can tell you first hand, my XM label does 0-60 in 3.2 seconds and handles otherworldly for a 6000+ pound vehicle.
Your last sentence sums up the weight concerns. My x5 M50 is top quality and handles well for a 5300 lb SAV, but handling is nowhere near the S2000 I have. You always feel the weight. However, like you mentioned, I'm looking forward to the reviews.

Really not happy.
On my ICE Jaguar, I set it once to manual and used paddle shifters. It really makes no difference to me whether that is moving a big stick to do that or pressing a lever downward. On my i5, it’s like moving to full regen. Press down from neutral to drive, press down again for B mode. I’m thinking on the M5, you press down for drive then once more for sport. You should already have electronic parking, so there is no need for that setting.

I was hoping to finally replace my 1998 Compact 3 series manual with a 5 series. Guess it wont happen again!! 🥵😡

When will they start making a 5 series that is a proper sportscar? I feel like my life is over before that happens.. And now you are telling me they are projecting things onto the entire length of the windshield? I want a 5 series that handles on track that i can shift like the F1 cars of old, with one hand on the steeringwheel! 🤠🤡

My biggest question is when BMW decided to make a tank of a 4 door 180mph autobahn-cruiser instad of a nimble sports car that i can drive through cones on the weekend. There is something they are getting totally wrong in Germany..

Coming from a F90 LCI, it's a little surprising to see this. On a positive note, at least it has an iDrive knob. My wife's '23 X1 has that annoying console shifter WITH NO iDrive knob and you have to reach out to the touch screen for almost everything, while is not only annoying, but IMO, a safety issue as well. Other than that. great SAV.

Hopefully manufacturers start to wake up and smell the coffee (or in this case, gear oil), but unlikely Probably just a few basic buttons. For the rest, it's "Hey BMW" I guess.

The current G80 M3 is your last chance to get what you seek. I suggest you do it now before it’s too late. Keep in mind that the G80 is quite close to the size of the E39 5 series and it strikes a great balance between being big enough to use for everything, but small enough to handle wonderfully.

Exactly!

Cue the 'OMG it's an automatic, why are you pretending to be shifting anyways?' tribe

Based on what you’re looking for, I think you’re in the wrong segment.

People will buy them because they want a 911, not because they want an EV. If an inferior 911 is all that’s available they’ll buy it.

This is a shame, I really haven’t been won over by the new exterior design for the 5, but seeing that the light switch shifter has permeated such a prolific M car is unfortunate. The silver lining is that the traditional physical shifter can be retrofitted on the MY23+ cars. A painful expense, but hopefully they have an option for it, though I think it’ll be unlikely.

Very true.

The G80/82 (base 6MT versions) and G87 (6MT) are the last BMW models at the proverbial fork in the road between BMWs’ mechanical past vs their future toward electrification and automation. They’re light(er), have manual transmissions, and handle nimbly.

Not saying what comes next won’t be fast/quick (of course they will be faster/quicker). But 5000+lb sports cars with an automatic transmission (or no transmission at all) will never feel like a 3750lb M2/3/4 with a 6MT.

Get one while you still can.
