Yeah this new M5 gonna set the bar for modern sports sedans. BMW doing their magic with faking physics.

The comment was on the interior of the car as the title of the thread suggests.

The stick in the center console is critical. I use it actively when I drive, along with the shift paddles. I always drive in manual. It allows me to have the best of both worlds …a shifter they mimics a manual and paddles like the best dual clutches….

Taking away the center console stick takes away another form of input of the transmission which provides less control.

Really not happy.

Power is indeed impressive but needed to account for the weight. I have an f80 m3 and x5 45e. Both are fast but the weight of the x5 is hard to hide especially around corners. Although a completely different car, the lightweight m3 just feels so nimble. I drove the XM at the bmw performance event and it didn’t feel all that great even with the extra power. Weight again is the issue. Perhaps in sedan format with a lower center of gravity they can mask it better.

Huge difference in the way those 2 drive. Same for my G87 and G01 X3. Scary corning when one forgets which car is being driven.

I mean we can’t compare all BMW’s to all BMW’s. We can’t even compare all real M cars to all real M cars. There’s room for this M5 in BMW’s defined market segment; it will sell well, there will be a waitlist, the folks that get one will love it.

Maybe I’ll get one too.

If this turns out to be true then that’ll just about take this car completely out of the equation as to any future purchase for me.
Having just bought an approved used M5 Competition, and absolutely loving it, I love having a traditional gear selector on it. Maybe it’s my age coming into play here and also being a bit of a traditionalist, I just don’t get this current trend of removing the selector in cars, to be replaced by some short stubby looking lever. It makes it look blander and less sporty imo so I’d be very disappointed if it turned out to be true.

My traditionalist views also extends to the current large curved screen they’ve been fitting in every car, making every car look identical. I just prefer a traditional cowled area for the speedo section with the separate idrive screen. I’m sure they could still of updated that concept and make it more modern looking instead of just making it identical to every other BMW.
An M car should be set apart in terms of external and internal design. Yes we know it’ll no doubt have insane performance but for me it’s the all round package ( outside & in ) that makes an M car feel truly special. The interior on my F90 M5 Competition is spot on for me and part of the reason I love the car.
I’d always reserve final judgement until I physically saw the car in person, but I know my own tastes so it looks like I’ll be sticking to older generation cars.

I respectfully disagree. I don’t think a lot of us are complaining about the gear shifter because we’re upset about evolution. I’d wager most of us (myself included) are upset about having to manually shift gears only via paddles while actively drivingnot about having to shift from P to D with a knob once at the beginning of our drive to put the car in gear.

I understand the M5 is not a proper sports car; it’s a sports sedan. But the sporty aspect of the very practical car it is is what drives a lot of us F90 guys into the platform. We want to be able to shift (again, while driving) with the shifter. I use it each and every single time I drive my DDed M5. If you’ve taken that away from me, the appeal of the car plummets.

I’ve got other cars that lack a physical gear shifter. I haven’t complained about those because I have no interest in controlling my shifts while I drive them. I actually prefer the knob in those.

I know you’re in an M car yourself, but certainly not one as “sporty” (as vague as that may be) as the M5. I bet that if you drove one with it, and are a fan of controlling your shifts while driving, and then you no longer had it, you wouldn’t be as enthusiastic in your sentiments. That’s exactly the case for a lot of us.

I think this is a (perhaps to some, small) hill many of us will die on.

Still awaiting the final release.

But for the last couple weeks- my mind has been set on paying off the F90, keeping it and starting a 992 project.

Can’t wrap my brain around all the $900
Detail parts before making it “complete”

Forget some other stunners on this board- I myself know for a fact I’ve crossed the 200k mark LONG ago.

I may get into a G90 as a DD, my above comments notwithstanding.

But +1 with you — there is no way I am getting rid of my F90 regardless.

I see size is slightly bigger than a regualr i5
This is going to be one hell of a large and heavy car
I’m sure it’ll handle well for a car if this size and weight but wouldn’t smaller and lighter be better still

Be very interesting to see how this sells

Personally think “peak cars” has just been passed and we’re now on the other side of the curve now

Ha man, you actually had the answer but failed to grasp it ? What the brands you mention have that the M5 won't, are column mounted pallets that won't move when you are in a drift or more often (at least in europe) in a tight roundabout. I often use my car in manual shifting mode and in some cases when in roundabouts or even taking a turn at a junction your steering wheel is probably upside down or some weird angles, the shifter is then very much appreciated to shift gear. Is it the end of the world ? Probably not but that was always a nice thing to have in what is supposed to be a sportier car.

That said i'm not convinced the spy photo is the full fledged M model vs perhaps a variant of M performance one... Which would explain the lack of shifter. I don't see the M1 and M2 buttons on the steering wheel or is due to the angle of the photo ?

Don’t want those plasticy looking interior trims on the doors. Better have some extended merino / veganza all over.

My recent 530i loaner looked so cheap on the inside door trims. Less than half leather, rest all plastic.

Ooh and can’t wait for the scratch loving exterior black plastic bits. Droooool

Some people prefer paddle shifters (like myself) over shifting gears with an automatic transmission stick. I get many car enthusiasts prefer stick but they (BMW) make what sells and most non car people don’t buy manuals and prefer paddle shifters…

Now I never said BMW paddle shifters were perfect, I feel for everyday driving it is fine and my preference over automatic stick shifting….if they made column shifters then that would be an improvement over their current shifters for sure…..and if they did that people will still complain about missing the stick….

On any car for that matter, especially Ms!

At least a beard trimmer like in the 992s would have been better than nothing. BMW has gone bipolar from a proper shifters to toggle scrolls/ switches.

And this is a top dog 5 series - more plastic trims is outright disrespect of its own legacy and brand/ class. BMW would have cut enough costs with the new iPads and other gimmicks, let the good stuff be, at least as a paid option.

I am not against iDrive advancements but the display should/ could remain as a proper instrument cluster like F90 and a centre console with the important buttons as buttons!

The weird part is the we may find this car to be of good quality (in person) considering the degrading standard of direct competitors. Smart move by BMW by delaying the degradation!
