I don’t understand this whatever happened to building a lightweight car with a lightweight, smaller engine, which people would have more fun with than trying to add more weight more horsepower.

Our 2022 X3 M40i.. it’s actually lightweight compared to this thing.. crazy!

It seems what I saw on youtube about the M5 being based on the i5 M60 seems true... maybe... i5 M60 = 5247lbs

Right, but BMW claimed the G87 weighs 38XX but people are weighing them at 36XX. BMW also claims the car makes 453 hp but multiple dynos read 46X to 47X to the wheels.
So I guess in theory, the new M5 could weigh something like 5,000 lbs and have 800 hp, until the battery dies. I know BMW has its magic and can transform how a car drives even it's heavy, but with my 2014 Grand Cherokee weighing like 4700 lbs, that's going to be tough, physics are physics.

  • Compared to G60, it will be 36mm longer and 70mm wider, with a slightly longer wheelbase due to a different suspension geometry. The curb weight is 2435kg. Standard tires: 285/40/20 front, 295/35/21 rear.
  • G90 M5 sedan in production 07/24-02/31
  • G99 M5 Touring SOP 11/24
  • 03/27 Interface switch to Panoramic Vision.
Sorry for my ignorance, but if the gas engine is producing 577hp, and electric motor is producing 194hp, how is that 718hp combined?!

Every time I get 771hp

Keeping an open mind here but damn, if you’re that chonky you might as well have gone full EV. Seems like worst of both worlds. Iirc the equivalent AMG GT hybrid has 830 hp and still wasn’t well received across the pond

What is the point?

That is worse power-to-weight ratio than outgoing model.

the power peaks at different points. thus 718, you can't just add the two power together.

The XM Label Red engine and electric motor have same outputs, but the combined number is 738hp.

Exactly. All of the weight of an EV, with none of the benefits. A hybrid system in something like this (a large sedan) makes zero sense.

I said this when it was first announced, and I'll say it again; just rip the bandage off and go full EV with it already. No hybrid, no dual-purpose ICE/EV chassis, just something designed from the ground up to be an EV.

Patiently waiting for Neue Klasse whilst driving the last great M5 made (F90 M5C).

Correct me if I’m wrong but BMW has never made an M (or any model for that matter) car that was slower than its predecessor.

Sure it’s a pig but it won’t be a slow one.

JK, I agree with those comparing it to current cars (Taycan, XM, etc.) not to other cars (someone said 911, why not throw in an Alpine too for good measure) or older ones.

And it looks great too. Interesting times, the ick for me is lack of manual. I can’t wait for this electric fad to pass and for us to get our manuals back.
Because my point is that the 911 is a modern car that has to deal with all the regulations and is still under 2000lb less than the G90. I could stack two of my 911 on top of eachother and they’d only barely weigh more than one G90. That’s embarrassing. BMW had a choice and decided to blow this porker up rather than cut weight.

I hadn't really paid attention to weight figures for the new 5er in general so I was curious to look them up just now. Quick googling results:

530i xDrive (B48) -- 4158 lbs
540i xDrive (B58) -- 4370 lbs
550e (B58 hybrid) -- 4916 lbs
i5 M60 - 5247 lbs

2023 g30 540i xDrive -- either 4050 or 4138 lbs (seeing both of these figures?)
F90 comp -- 4370 lbs

Guessing maybe +300 lbs from one gen to next in general, and +600 more for a hybrid setup. The M5 has a slightly smaller battery than the 550e (18.6 vs 19.4 kWh) and I assume a bigger motor. XM and 550e both have the motor integrated with the AT. Seems they didn't do anything drastic (or even mild, maybe...) to compensate and cut weight compared to last gen.

I don't actually have a point here, just had some pot and now thinking out loud.

No surprises here. More batteries, more safety. No free lunch.

On the upside, I think the value of my daily driven M5 CS just went up!

Setting aside the weight, the proportions are a big concern for me. The G60 is already super big and this is even bigger. At what point do we stop calling it a 5 series?
