eSIM lost setup...?
Hey,
I don’t think many of us have gone the personal eSIM route. In fact I’ve been one to complain that it doesn’t work all that well! But, I figure they’ll figure it out, and it’s cheap on my plan so I though why not. My i5 got the update to 7/2024.40, and since then the eSIM has glitched out. The car says it meets 3/4 conditions, and that I need to complete setup. The app says the eSIM is active but now it says not set up in the car. However, I can’t get the setup to proceed because the app thinks I need to add it to the car, and in the car, it shows the eSIM but that I need to complete setup. My assumption is that I need to delete it, somehow, from the vehicle, but it’s not clear how to do that. Do I reset the car? I’ve rebooted iDrive a couple of times to no avail, thinking that might force it to resync. If I reset, though, in the car, do I lose everything? Anyone had this kind of issue? I’d call the hotline but of course it’s Saturday. Everything else works and of course I can do anything I would need to via CarPlay. I may just leave it alone until next week when I can call them during the week, but maybe someone has an idea… Thanks! |

It feels as though the whole over the air system is in disarray right now between the data center outages (or whatever was responsible for the MyBMW app losing connectivity), the partial push of the OTA updates etc. I wonder if it’s worth seeing if the situation resolves itself as BMW (hopefully) gets its servers and services back online? It doesn’t feel that we’re there yet.
Between this and the stop sale/recall it’s a real black eye for the company. |

After reading some of the issues folks had with the eSIM, I removed mine (using the app) prior to doing the firmware update. When it was finished, I reinstalled the eSIM (I use T-Mobile) and all was well...for about an hour. Then all the BMW server connectivity issues arose and it went back to the 3/4 situation that you describe. However, now that connectivity/synching seems to have returned (but for how long?), it's fine again.
Good luck with yours! |

So you deactivated it in the app and then redid it?
I’m just kind of not clear exactly what to do… Just click this DEACTIVATE and redo? Last edited by Sturob; 10-05-2024 at 11:32 AM.. |

Yup, that's what I did, then did the update and finally restored the eSIM using the app and the vehicle. Seems fine now--have made several calls with it.
Good luck. |

Thank for that information, that's good to know because I also use the eSIM with T-Mobile.

This was a great thread well I'm having the same issue in my car The problem is I tried to remove the ESIM in the app after the update and mine is stuck on deactivating so it's been like that for a week so I can't reactivate it's grayed out I left that screenshot in another post but I'll leave it again The goal was to remove and react but that didn't work out for me made it worse

So here’s what’s happened for me.
I deactivated the eSIM in MyBMW. My car didn’t show that, it still showed 3/4 steps. Fine. I gave it overnight, drove the car around this morning a while, rebooted iDrive, and what have you. Still 3/4. So I activated the eSIM in MyBMW. In the Devices app in iDrive, it still showed 3/4 steps, but when I clicked Settings in the car’s app, it said all that needed to happen was activation with Verizon. So I did that again in Verizon, which just needed the paired cell number. That worked. I got a text from Verizon stating that it was activated, and that they’d put the activation fee on my next bill. So I called Verizon, who actually seemed to understand the issue, and said that text is automatic and they confirm this is just reactivating the current pairing eSIM to phone number so no activation fee. It appears to be functioning. But iDrive is clumsy, and the Verizon process is also clumsy. I feel like it should be easier to just delete the eSIM pairing in the car, or even in the phone app, but maybe I expect too much. You do see a lot of warnings that doing this does nothing to cancel the contract with your provider and if you were getting rid of it completely you’d still have to contact the mobile provider to stop it. (News Flash: something is glitchy and somewhat unintuitive) Stuart |

And after writing that mine had been deactivated, firmware upgrade, reactivated and all was well...now I'm back to the same 3/4 steps as you...this after actually using the eSIM to make a call before. BMW software/firmware and processes leave a LOT to be desired.

I just am in the process of doing the same thing with T-Mobile. My T-Mob account sees the number of the eSIM, but if I try to activate, it logs me into my T-Mob account and wants me to add **another** line....so I'm doing as you've done. This is nuts. The fact that you got yours working again following this procedure gives me hope!

I spoke to my BMW dealer on Friday and there was a service bulletin that ConnectedDrive was down which makes sense based on the same issues I had as outlines in prior messages. It came back yesterday and was working and then again this morning, it wasn’t working again….

Yeah you might just want to hold off on that I think this is a BMW thing because I had T-Mobile delete my account and just deactivate it so I can start over and that banner just would not go away saying that my Sim is deactivating there's an issue with their server it's not refreshing properly

Your mileage may vary, of course, and being conservative is of course the safest option.
Mine worked well on the way to work this morning. Miracle of miracles, but that was after doing all the deactivating and reactivating etc. I’m just waiting for the other shoe to drop. |

Just want to share my experience, since I installed the OTA update yesterday and am with T-Mobile. The short of it is this: it worked with zero issues for me. Perhaps your issues had to do with the combination of the BMW server problem and the update happening at the same time? Not sure, but I hope you get it figured out.

Yeah I probably should have just left mine alone instead of trying to deactivate it cuz now I can't get rid of that message saying it's deactivating it's actually kind of annoying I already had T-Mobile canceled my account so I could reset it up again but that's not getting rid of that banner I think it has something to do with BMW I don't know why everybody else could deactivate theirs and reactivate again but I can't I know that this is all associated with your profile I was going to remove my profile from my phone and then read it but I think it'll break even more
