2024 G60 Designer's interview - confused car?

This video seems to have some great info on what inspired the design. While its great to listen to what philosophy was adopted, it almost seems like the design direction is muddled with many many compromises, some driven by government standards, safety regulations, efficiency, BUT others just from pure preference of the design team.
  • Its more Italian design than the G30 that was more German (Sure, when did BMW start making Italian cars? Alfa Romeo war? Fire Red is not Ferrari Red )
  • Headlights are easier to understand, its more of a design direction they are taking but that part is more German though on an Italian looking car? (X5 and X6 look way nicer and more of a complete car each that flows as one and seems less confused in their character)
  • Side profile resembles RR (which is great, big stance and gives it the road presence, but does the rest of the car feels like that - not as much - IMO they could have done something to the rear end to make it flow as one).
  • Rear end - the tail lights and sloping trunk are driver by aerodynamic efficiency targeting the electric drivetrain, forcing a slim design. The angle on the side profile makes no sense however, more of a manufacturing simplicity and cost savings, sharp cut like Japanese makers.
  • Hofmeister Kink logo addition is primarily for China market, need to illuminate something right? But why the number 5, can't people tell its not a 3 and not a 7? So that became the design on all vehicles for all markets to make a single metal body panel. (Alternative: if they let the kink flow naturally and put extra metal in there instead of the tacky FIVE, not too sure if it would look odd, likely won't but they can't illuminate anything for Chinese customers). The whole point of Hofmeister kink is gone because of the masking and "reshaping" where it meets the metal, if you will.
  • The car looks like it rides the height of the 5GT or the short-lived 6-series (GT). We'll need to see it on the road. Would the 530 (x)i and 540xi ride lower?
  • Interior design team did well, knocked it out of the park pretty much. Great emphasis on reducing Carbon footprint with non-leather (US market will also get no leather?) but seems like the configurability of the comfort seats has been compromised in the driver's business sedan -- more to be seen when the test drives are available.
Overall, my takeaway is they have different schools of thoughts and design philosophies based on which side you look at - front, side and rear. Trying to fit them all into one car which is "elegant", "sporty", and "dynamic" gave us this mish mash. Only the grille and rear diffuser are the knobs they can turn to change the character - quite disappointing. Well, we will eventually get used to this design and learn to like it all.

It's not a clean flowing ONE character car that appeals and speaks like an individual personality. F10 was, G30 was. Even E60 was to a good extent, all quite German.

G60 feels like a 5th generation kid who is born in a diverse land with some genes from all continents...

Meanwhile Porsche continues to modernize exterior on their cars keeping the Porsche DNA.

Finally here it is from HB.

Weird how he thinks it’s going to be received as well as the recent Touring Concept.
Car looks too tall, obviously some of that is due to the battery, and the 3/4 rear view in the press release is simply awful. The lack of any flared arches make it look so plain and slab sided.

Anyway, ageing hipsters with shoes and no socks isn’t good.

Seems like too many cooks in the kitchen and the master chef has been reading the newspaper all the time.
