Change in B mode

I've enjoyed driving my i5m60 in both B mode and D mode over the past several months, and frequently toggle between the two depending on driving conditions (and if I have any passengers).
About two weeks ago, I noticed a complete change in how the B mode was driving. It completely lost the ability for one pedal driving and now there is barely any difference between the two modes .
I brought the car into the dealership, and they are saying that nothing is wrong. They believe that there may have been an over the air update that may have altered how the car drives.
Has anyone else noticed this?
They gave me an i4 loaner- that absolutely has the altered b mode.
It is a completely different driving experience.

I have not noticed this in my eDrive40. It's slightly alarming I will admit. Now that I am used to driving in B mode and do so 95% of the time, I'd hate for an OTA update to change it so dramatically. My car is still on iDrive version 03/2024.57. However, I suspect that it might get updated next week when I take it in for service. We will see!

Thanks for sharing this info.

FYI, I did just get an update to the myBMW app today on Android - hopefully that won't cause any issues. :-) It is now version 4.9.2 (36892)

My B mode feel hasn't changed at all, but I haven't received any recent OTA updates. The MyBMW app on my iPhone did update yesterday and I needed to reconnect to my account and digital key so maybe an update is coming.

What SW version are you running? My B mode is working fine as one pedal

Since day one I noticed when going from D to B mode a slight slow down in vehicle speed and the opposite when going from B to D. This is obviously due to the electrification of the windings to create the regeneration. I am wondering if they are trying to make the shift between modes less noticeable.

Interesting - I got an early update from my dealer the other week and there might be a shade less regen….but I had a loaner eDrive40 during that time that felt as though it had markedly less recuperative braking than my M60. It still felt that way when I got my M60 back. I’m writing this on a flight to Europe currently so will have to wait a bit to test it out again, but there might be something in that. What level of recuperation do you have set in D mode?

I’m running 07/2024.40 currently.

This shift you feel may also just be a recalibration of the throttle pedal - you feel that happen when you shift between modes too.

I 99% drive in efficient because for me that is plenty of power. I am going to do the D-B-D test again in different modes on way home tonight. I also notice that when using cruise control in D mode speed changes are smoother than in B mode. A lot of little things you notice driving in traffic

I have not had the OTA yet, but I am constantly having to use my brake pedal and I’m always looking down to make sure it is in B. I did have a message last week that software was installed successfully. It’s still the same iDrive version. I suspect that software updates are fairly frequent but iDrive software updates are not. Something has definitely changed as I never used my brake pedal until this past week.

I noticed this over the weekend and I though I was imagining it. Had to look down a couple of times to make sure I was in B mode. Hmmmm, will have to check it out properly tomorrow....

This is interesting to me because I didn't think it would make a difference when using cruise control. However, the car really waits a long time to brake when cars are stopped at a light and I'm coming upon them at speed. I wonder if that would not be so jarring if I put it in D mode when using cruise control. I will try that tomorrow to see if it feels any different. Thanks for that idea.

I didn't think of it that way either. Interesting. I usually just stay in B even after getting on the highway and using assist.

My understanding is that the recuperation level setting didn’t use to apply in B mode, only in D mode. But perhaps now the recuperation is adjustable (or just plain set wrong) on B mode. You might try adjusting the recuperation level setting to “high” or whatever it is called while in B mode and see if you get back the higher level of recuperation using the one pedal. Keep in mind that there could be a software problem caused by an upgrade where the previous recuperation setting still displays as set, but it isn’t internally so you need to set a different level of recuperation and then back to your preferred setting so that the internal state is now correct. Worth a try.
