Given both cars were traveling in opposing directions - combined speed was very likely >> 40mph

In a safe vehicle and in a safe manner. It seems like all the worst drivers in the world live here in Florida. My daughter almost got run over yesterday by a driver trying to cut around us in car line no less!

Maximum of one repair shop. But definitely not one in Germany. Maybe the wreck goes to Eastern Europe?
Skoda Fabia comes across an i5 almost unchecked. So 1,200 kg (2,650 lbs) met 2,200 kg (4,850 lbs). The speed was estimated to be > 60 mph.

Something like this is usually fatal. Unfortunately! The authorities are investigating.

As per the post above yours a small euro hatchback, it wouldn't stand a chance against a new i5, and for me this is an issue as people can drive with impunity in these beasts (I'm not saying that's what happened) but it's incumbent on all of us to drive with care for one another no matter how safe we feel in our big car.

That looks like one hell of an impact, dreadful.

There have been dozens of totaled G60s in the US. (based on the large number parts auctions for totaled G60s that I've seen so far... most are in Florida, California, Maryland and unsurprisingly, Pennsylvania)
Most of which are from Sixt, as well as several 2024 x5s and x7s.

We’ve had two planes land on the roadways here in SoFla in the last few weeks.. a light aircraft in Parkland FL, and a business jet crashed on i75 in Naples (both pilots perished).

This weekend, we were 3rd in a left turn lane. When the arrow indicated we could turn the BMW M4 in front of us tried to pas the car in front during the turn and didn’t make it. We had to brake to avoid hitting them. This is why BMW drivers get a bad rap.

Is that a bottle of wine or other alcoholic beverage lying near the car in the first picture?

This tragic story is a stark reminder that there are more important things than the geometry of the grill, car’s silhouette, and acronyms such as LCI.

Our neighbor - an X5 driver - walked away from an unthinkable crash. She bought another X5 without even hesitating.

Yea for sure safety is #1 priority especially with kids in car. No doubt.

Front offset crash on a back road and looks to be very high speed. You can tell by the pictures that the BMW essentially moved straight through the other car so likely a huge difference in weight between the two. This is evidenced by the steel wheels (lower cost and older) on the other vehicle, each vehicle's direction/position after the crash and the fact that a large section of the frame is missing all the way to the rear wheel on the other vehicle.

There is some intrusion into the BMW cell but overall the car did its job protecting the occupant. Steering column collapsed and slight deformation at the top of the A pillar which means the speeds were up there.

In general a horrible thing to see and terrible for the other driver who passed away. Looking at it from a different perspective, if you care about safety these pictures show real world proof of modern BMW build quality.

It is a spray bottle of some sort, you can make it out if you zoom in

Thank you. I zoomed in at 200 percent and still had a little trouble making it out.

Could be interesting compare the G60 i5 to a normal 5 series with a engine: in the first photo of the crashed i5 seems that the empty space under the bonnet could cause an increase of work for the arches and sides of the engine bay to absorbe the force of the impact.

Significant progress has been made in 20 years.
Some manufacturers better than others. The minimum requirements that need to be met are arguably quite low now , it’s the likes of IIHS and Euroncap that go beyond those and high light any weaknesses

Remember any car on sale passes the government requirements at time of sale but that doesn’t mean there’s room for improvement

Prayers to those affected by the passing of the driver.

Super sad no matter who’s at fault. And for the survivor I hope for a speedy recovery. I’m sure he’s also hanging by a thread or was as this happens a few days ago. Does anyone know if the other driver survived his injuries?

RIP to the younger man not wearing his seatbelt. As another person mentioned, not sure if he would survived that collision regardless. But still, he was taken too soon. German cars are built well & my E36 saved my life. I almost never made it my 30th birthday. But after rolling over a few times & landing on the roof, I was able to walk away. Thank fully I was wearing my seatbelt.
