Stop Sale Aug 2024?
My cousin was to take delivery of his new 540ix today, but he received a call that delivery is on hold due to a stop sale order from BMW NA. Anyone know anything about this? Wondering if it is just BS from his dealer here in CA.

Unlikely, the dealer wants to get the car in and sold as much (or more) as the customer. The CA should be able to tell you what the stop sale is and how long it'll be until there is a fix. I had one when my car arrived in NJ and it was resolved within 24 hours and on its way to the dealership.
If you search the forum there have been several threads about stop sales and there is a website where you can put in your VIN number and it will tell you if your car is subject to a stop sale and if there is a fix available. It probably won't be a big deal though. Good luck. |

I was told by dealer here it’s affects 77k cars and tons of cars sitting on the lot that they can’t even let customers out to test drive now. No ETA no fix.

Not BS, they expanded an existing recall to include more cars, including newly built 2025 models.
This is the existing recall, which was initially reported to affect 79k cars: https://www.nhtsa.gov/recalls?nhtsaId=24V104000 Yesterday, BMW added a lot more cars to this recall, which is not reflected in the NHTSA database yet. This took people by surprise, causing the stop sale on cars scheduled for delivery today. We don't know the new number of affected cars yet, but it seems to be a significant increase. Check the BMW USA safety and recall page, and you will probably find the VIN is subject to the 24V-104 Integrated Brake recall. They can't sell you the car right now with that open recall. Will they try to get the waiver system in place to let people take deliveries and come back for the fix? I'm sure they are trying hard to do that, but failing brakes is a bad look and a liability they may not be able to take on. The last status report they submitted on July 29th shows they have fixed 10,715 of the 79,670 cars from the recall. Now there are a lot more that need the fix. |

What the heck? I think this happened to me earlier this week. I have an i5 e40. Just crossed 5000 miles. All of a sudden while sitting at a signal light, I got an error saying parking brake malfunction and driver’s assist malfunction. I was within one mile of where I needed to go so I drove on very carefully, BUT the regenerative braking (B mode) stopped working and the brake pedal had to be pressed extra hard and further depressed to stop and it was also making some noises. I made it to the parking lot and did the reboot thing but it made no difference. I contacted the dealer and they said I should get it towed. I took care of my stuff and went back in an hour to try it again and it was back to normal. It’s been two days and the problem hasn’t returned. I wonder if it was actually the recall? I even thought if it was my wife driving the car, how would she have handled it?

I was supposed to take delivery of my car tomorrow. According to notice it looks like they need to manufacture a new part and it says a fix may take several hours. It sounds like it may take weeks or months to take delivery. Is anyone thinking differently?

Some chronology I found interesting: In November, [of 2023] the supplier indicated that, production process anomalies could have occurred to certain internal components of the IB. Preliminary information indicated that this could cause an interference of the electrical signal to the IB’s motor position sensor. This would illuminate a warning symbol and message in the vehicle’s instrument cluster. Further reviews, and dynamic driving tests, were planned to understand and assess potential effects on vehicle performance. A review of information based upon customer perception and field experience was also planned One of the TSB notifications states the vehicles have to be inspected, and if it fails to meet specifications it must be replaced. Here's some statistics they published in July 2024. Note, they aren't saying that EVERY car needs a new one. Only that upon inspection, if the IG Motor sensor fails testing, then the unit needs to be replaced. My thought is that at worst, they do the inspection, and it will likely (by statistical averages) be just fine. Your odds (based on these statistics to date) of needing a new one are about 0.550% |

Yep we have our 25 X7 that we were going to get this weekend affected by this. My sales guy says he has never seen a recall affect so many models. He hopes to have an update Monday.

So I think there may be some confusion. I believe there are actually several BMW recalls with stop sale active simultaneously.
The most recent one is the starter motor. https://www.reuters.com/business/aut...rn-2024-08-08/ Before that was the IB (Integrated Braking I believe) (basically the brake booster). See the post above at https://www.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...php?p=31375454 |

SHOCKING how many active recalls affecting so many models at the same time, and this has been going on since Spring 2022. Happy, but very surprised Consumer Reports voted BMW #1.

If BMW ia number 1 rated, just think what the other brands must be like. I also believe many of BMW's issues might be generated by problems with suppliers/vendors. BMW doesn't make most of the components, they buy them. Probably solicit bids to supply, and the vendors submit samples to be evaluated. BMW selects and commits to an order. But then the vendor value-engineers the components to make more profit. And look what happens.

Most likely the problem is faulty parts from a vendor. BMW probably goes thru a bid process with various suppliers, and then the winner tries to make more profit by value engineering the originally approved parts. Just a theory.

I have a feeling they design it to BMW's specification. Having something happen like this to a part you skimped on in manufacturing to save a few bucks, will likely land you on a manufacturing blacklist. Why do that when you can sell 100k's of a product to BMW per year? Risk doesn't seem worth the reward. At that point, you might as well shutter your company.

I’m sure it’s all about shrinking margins up and down the supply chain. As you noted earlier Todd, hopefully this fault will continue to affect just a small minority of cars built.

No wonder their market day supply for dealers is 200+. I think we're going to see a lot of U.S. dealerships go belly up this year. They simply can't move inventory at these price points. |

Brakes
When I got the call on Friday the dealer thought the stop-selll had to do with the brakes.

I can confirm the stop sale is due to 24V-104. We were supposed to take delivery Friday and stop sale was issued Thursday. Now we patiently wait for our new X1 M35i.

I'm wondering if ours are going to be fixed before they build them, or before they leave the factory? Or if they just keep pumping them out and let the dealers figure it out later?

BMW "Stop Sale Notice" for Model x5
This is true. I was literally on my way to pickup a new x5 and told there was a "Stop Sale Order" that prevented the Dealer from delivering the vehicle to me. We will have to wait for further information.
