Siri isn’t lowering the volume

On my 2020 X5 (and other brand vehicles with CarPlay) when I activate Siri either via the button or “Hey Siri” the volume of the stereo lowers while I am speaking my command. Then once the sequence is over the volume returns.

On my i5 when I activate Siri the volume does not go down. So if Siri is reading a message to me or confirming my command I can barely hear it. Anyone else experience this? I’m not even sure how to go about fixing this.

Thanks in advance.

I know that I can adjust my navigation volume separate from my music when using Waze and YouTube music. I just need to wait for Waze to alert me to something and then navigation volume shows up on screen and I can adjust it just like usual.

Yeah. I can do that. I mean for instance I’m listening to Sirius and I long press to activate Siri. My X5 would lower the volume while I “spoke” with Siri and when Siri was done it return to normal volume. It doesn’t do that now.

There is a setting for that. I have to take a deep dive in my car to find it for you. Will do that soon.

Might be an iOS 10.4 change/issue. I'll have to see how this works in my wife's car, but I noticed this yesterday in my i5.

siri not lowering background volume

my 2023 i7 with idrive 8.5 is doing the same thing. It used to work fine, but now when siri is activated, the volume of the background radio does not go down, eventhough in settings, it is set for maximum reduction relative to background sound. I took it into the BMW genius at the dealership and he couldn't figure it out. He said he'd look into it. Its been a few weeks. I'll have to call him to follow up

So I might have a fix. So far it has fixed the problem in my X7 and i5 both running 8.5.

From the Home Screen on the BMW I went to the apps menu. Then the System Settings. There was a setting for Voice Control. I turned OFF the Hey Siri function. Once I did that it seemed to work perfectly. Now I also toggled the long press button from Siri to not assigned and back again to Siri. I do not know if that had any impact. But leaving the Hey Siri off has it working properly (for now). Let me know if that helps.

EDIT: When I say working properly there is one caveat…it lowers the volume but it also switches to the CarPlay source. Once the Siri interaction is done it returns to the previous source. My old X5 did not behave that way.
