Ohio vehicle registration fees for electric, plug-in hybrid, hybrid.

ORC 4503.10 C.3.a, b, c

Quote:
The registrar and each deputy registrar shall collect the following additional fee, as applicable, for each application for registration or registration renewal received for any hybrid motor vehicle, plug-in hybrid electric motor vehicle, or battery electric motor vehicle:

(a) One hundred dollars for a hybrid motor vehicle;

(b) One hundred fifty dollars for a plug-in hybrid electric motor vehicle;

(c) Two hundred dollars for a battery electric motor vehicle.
Really? So is this what they call fleecing or what? Extra $150 for me to register my 550e once I get it per year. Oh yay! I thought the idea is to encourage consumers towards cleaner more efficient vehicles. Ohio you rock!

Well I guess it used to be $200 and House Bill 23 2023 modified the language and broke it down to the three scheduled fees depending on electric vehicle type, so..... I guess, thanks? I saved $50. . O-H. MoFo's!

I know. Honestly it’s criminal, but considering Ohio’s shitastic legislature, unsurprising.

When you figure it out, at $0.385 of Ohio tax per gallon the “fee” works out to be roughly 390 gallons of gas per year. Conservatively assuming a person averages 30mpg the Ohio Legislature is effectively billing you for an additional 13,650 miles per year, even if you only drove 6,000.

Comparatively, the owner of an ICE vehicle in Ohio gets charged $31 for registration, or roughly 2415 miles at 30mpg efficiency.

Having recently moved here from the Bay Area, there are many things I miss. Just not the cost of living. Milk is much more reasonable at $2.68/gallon. Eggs less than $3. Oh, and vehicle registration costs (hybrid or BEV aside) being $31. Comparatively it cost me $545 to register my Audi for a year in the Golden State.

This is a trend that’s gaining steam now that hybrids and EVs have been around long enough.

States have figured out that they aren’t collecting as much road-use taxes from hybrids and BEVs that they normally get through taxes on gasoline. Hence the official explanation is that the EV drivers should be paying the state directly for road use. Whether or not any of the collected money does that duty or is redirected elsewhere is a whole another topic.

Agreed. WA was talking about it right about when I left for Europe in 2019. The complaints were that being unable to collect Gas tax on these vehicles they were basically using the roads for free. ICE drivers agreed and mistakenly thought it would reduce the gas tax. Apparently the masses don't understand that once big government finds a way to make extra money off the people, they don't let it go back to what it was. Here in Spain Gas is about $8 a gallon. $5.00 a gallon on base for U.S. only. And we can get a credit card for use out in town that is a special fleet card that they don't charge the IVA tax on. They just bill it directly to my personal credit card without the tax.

Have you received your annual insurance policy renewal yet, I did?

My M550 jumped drastically to $3,333.00 per year (100/300 $1,000 deductible 3,500 mi/yr personal use) due to “higher repair costs, repair part shortages and lack of repair centers” according to my insurance company, AAA. I was told rate increases have affected German cars the most. I have had insurance through AAA since 1989 and have every discount available, a clean driving record and no accidents.

I called yesterday to get a quote on insurance for an i5 and was quoted $3,890.00/year for the same use as my M550. Another reason these cars are not flying off the lot.

I have started looking at other carriers, but switching is not an easy thing to do in California since most major insurance companies will not take on new policies for auto and home now.

Before you buy or lease in California, I suggest you check the insurance cost first, if it is a concern.

My auto insurance got bumped generally last year; we have 4 cars on the policy for my family (only 1 is an EV) and they’ve made it harder to break down which payments are assigned to which auto just recently (of course), but as we know insurance rates are dependent on so many factors here. The home owners situation is ridiculous - but I think this is spreading across the nation as the business model of insurance is starting to collapse. I’m not sure how long and how large an issue this will cause with home prices but that feels inevitable as first time buyers who can barely afford down payments and mortgages as it is will be unable to get insurance. Will stop myself from slipping down a doom-hole at this time in the morning, but it’s a real issue.

We have complained about Calif. car registration fees for decades. We are in the process of moving to Arizona and their DMV fees are DOUBLE or more than DOUBLE of Calif. We were shocked.

My dad just moved from NM to AZ and his 3 year old Toyota Highlander was $59 in NM and $661 in AZ.

Our 911 will be $4000 a year in AZ :-O

In MI our 8 year old Volt registration is $250 and our Pacifica PHEV is $350. I expect our 550e will run $500.

In Washington, mine is about $300. I don’t remember what I paid for my Jaguar. I know my insurance went down though. I really should pay more attention, but I just pay something when it comes in. I did get a bit of a shock that my pharmacist license went up to $530. But, it’s for 2 years.

US citizens are generally not receptive to toll roads so fuel taxes have been used as a rough approximation for road use tax. EVs complicate this approach to roadway maintenance funds. Especially considering that EVs are heavier and cause more roadway wear and tear yet do not refuel with gasoline or diesel.

Nobody likes seeing a three digit number they have to swallow all at once but a lot of research on transportation policy suggests 150-300 dollars per year for a hybrid, PHEV, or EV is what the state is missing in revenue from fuel tax. I work for such an institute in my state and the policy center essentially found the same sort of number for Alabama.

Some of the rates I see you guys quoting are staggeringly high to me. When I moved from California to Ohio, GEICO refused to lower my rates, citing some BS about higher levels of construction in this area; I dumped them and went with Hartford.

Over a year they raised my policy 25% for no reason. I got a quote for the 540 and laughed. They wanted $1400/6 months. I was paying $500 for the Audi. So I dumped them.

I quoted the 540 with Travelers before I ever signed with them on the Audi. $640 for 6 months.

The thing I’ve learned is that loyalty to insurance companies gets you nothing, except fleeced. If I have to change every year, I’ll do it. And it’s a pain, between auto, home, and umbrella coverage.

I've been very happy for many years with the insurance company Costco provides. They have been the lowest rates every time I checked with other companies and they have settled claims quickly and completely over the years. For example, when I added my i5 eDrive40 to our policy, it went up less than $500 / 6 months.

Get a quote from Costco if you can. It might be competitive.

So far I have been good with USAA. I never have issues and any claims have been paid promptly and they don't raise my rates. I quoted the 540 but can't remember what it was. But if you are eligible for it, get a quote from them.

Did you net out that number from the cost of electric? And don't forget if you have solar that expense too. The positive if you use EA.
Here in Bklyn no EA locations close by so not really helpful to me. Unless I'm going to my place in Jamesport where there is one.

Once again I suggest anyone check with their local electric supplier for discounts or rebates like exist in NYC with ConEd.
