When I first got the car, I started driving in D with adaptive turned on. I found it too difficult to be smooth because the car would change between low med high (adaptive) on it's own. Then I tried D in high regen mode. I liked it, but the throttle was so sensitive I figured I may as well drive in B mode. Now, I have been trying D, medium. The regen is consistent (and predictable) so easier to be smooth and I'm growing to like it. I'm not sure if I'll ever get to B mode, or even D high, but we'll see.

I've been keeping it in D adaptive, and switching to B when my charge is getting a little lower. I also live in small valley between two largish hills, so I'll switch it to B then too in order to get max battery regen and no brake wear. B in stop and go traffic would seem ideal, but when you look at the live BMW view and see that the brake lights aren't always lighting up, that's a good way to get rear ended.

The biggest problem I've had with adaptive is traffic spacing here in NJ. Traffic is heavy and we all drive tightly spaced, certainly not like driving in Germany. I appreciate that the car is trying to regen as much as possible to get better than advertised range, but I sometimes end up with way too much spacing between me and the car in front. It slows down prematurely, so I might try it in the lowest regen mode in D and see how that works out.

That issue of traffic coming into gaps is what makes adaptive not quite ideal here in the Bay Area too. For the brake lights, after living with the car for nearly 5months, I’ve found that the brake lights come on when the deceleration is significant enough to mimic braking rather than say “engine braking”. I’m at a place where I feel fully confident in the system and seen how others react around me.

I am still a full time ‘B’ mode. I have turned on the driver’s assist in traffic. It follows the car distance according to what I set in iDrive. It works well and obeys traffic lights. I need to turn on the vehicle view to see how much the car regens when on ACC.

When driving assist is turned on (not steering, just distance) and I'm driving on "normal" roads with traffic lights, will the system stop at red lights? Mine doesn't seem to do so unless there is a car in front of me that stops or is already stopped. Either that, or it wants to start braking much later than I normally would so I'm always hitting the brake when I approach red lights.

Yes, mine stops at red lights. I’m not sure if it is a setting or not. I know I subscribe to traffic light and sign recognition.

Thanks. I'll have to try it again and wait a little longer before braking myself.

It stops at red lights? I was unaware BMW had activated this feature in the US.

Is it stopping at red lights because you are driving in B mode and taking your foot off the pedal it brakes?? Curious to know if it can recognize a red light and stop??

Teslas will do this, but I didn't think BMW had enabled this feature in the US.

Most signals in the US have lights on the other side of the intersection, so the car will stop midway through. On neighborhood streets, the traffic signals in my area are European style, so the car stops. The feature we don’t have is the red light/green light in the HUD.

My HUD will display a red light symbol when it detects a red light. Do you mean that it won't show a green light?

Ok, I think I figured it out. I only use stop & go on side streets with a 35mph speed limit. Red lights only trigger when someone is pulling out of their neighborhood. There is always a car in the intersection when the light is red, so it’s probably stopping because there is a car in the cross path.

Yes, it only does red lights and any traffic signs.
