i5 M60 knocking sound

I've had my i5 M60 since late October and love the vehicle. Given the quiet nature of an EV I tend to focus on interior noises more than I did on my G80. While the AC is running I've heard a knocking sound that seems to be coming from under the center console, behind the wireless charger tray, from the passenger side.

For now my fix is just to crank up the tunes but I need to get it checked out at the dealership.

Anyone else hearing the same thing.

I have mine since November and have the same issue. I am doing the same as you for now, bring the volume up and forget about it till I can go to the dealer to figure what the noise is.

I have not heard this but have experienced a sort of a pulsation or thud while DC charging. It’s almost as if a pump is moving fluids around. Actually reminds me of when a sump pump abruptly shuts off and shakes the pipes. Could be the battery coolant pumps.

I’ll try to keep track of this over different scenarios and outside temps.

I do feel a slight bump while DC charging. Could no doubt be a variety of things, but seemed like it was a normal sound/feeling. At least it doesn't sound like a PTU in an Airbus.

Add me to the list with the knocking sound. If you turn off the climate system it goes away. That narrows it down for dealer repair.

The audio volume is my solution until I have to bring in the car for something else.

If anyone out there got it fixed, please let us know what it was.

Thanks.

Somewhat glad to learn that its not just my i5. I plan on taking it in for a check-up in the next couple weeks.

Sounds like a coolant valve operating. But without a video i can’t say for sure. Common on i4 where the coolant valve behind the LF headlight would make a knock sound in consistent fashion when at a standstill.

I got my i5 M60 last month and am also experiencing same sound. Also my friend with an i5 same problem. Clearly AC related but haven’t been able to go to service dept.
Anyone had this looked at yet?

The knocking sound, I believe, is condensate from the AC dripping down a tube. I have the same noise in my I5 M60 produced in October.

BMW implemented a change at the factory in December 2023 to fix the problem, and the bulletin I saw from BMW says a fix is being developed that our dealers will install.

They change a part inside the drain tube to break the water flow so you no longer hear the drip as it drains.

Is this a only for the I5 M60 does this affect the 530Xdrive? And it's cold here in Mass so not much AC yet.

I took mine in last month and they said we are working on it but didn't show me the bulletin. No timeline was given but they said they would contact me as soon as the fix was finalized.

I’ve not experienced this problem either but it’s nowhere near warm enough in Northern CA to have meaningful AC use yet. Will be interesting to see if more complaints surface as we move through Spring

I had snow again this morning. I usually don’t need AC until August. We normally get about one week of upper 80’s to 90.

I noticed a similar issue with my car, but not sure if it's the same. When the car is stopped, I not only hear a knocking, but there is a thump and a bit of movement, somewhat reminiscent of an ICE engine with a rough idle. Of course, it's nowhere near as constant or turbulent, but it's definitely out of place with an electric powertrain.

Is that what you are experiencing, as well? Or is this very different?

That or it’s the new virtual assistant in the OTA update to iDrive

Just as an additional data point: I’m experiencing the exact same knocking sound under the center console. It seems to occur more frequently when I come to a stop after braking or turning hard. While it's not a huge annoyance, it's very apparent given the rest of the car is so quiet. I'm interested to hear when dealers will start installing the fix.

The sound is well documented in Carwow review. Watch a bit to the fifth annoying thing.

Really helpful! I will say, I’ve also hit my knee on that dash trim exactly as he noted, fortunately just once but it’s a good call out.

...And the A/C is running the VAST majority of the time whilst driving & not a single sound like some are experiencing. Our mornings can be cool (even cold) here, but by afternoon time...A/C AUTO 70F is running 12 months a year!
