BMW i5 M60 beats EPA range estimate in Edmunds' test: 264 miles real world range

https://www.edmunds.com/car-news/202...rm-update.html

According to the EPA, an i5 M60 xDrive fitted with 21-inch wheels like our long-termer should get 240 miles. In fact, our 264-mile result with the i5 M60 with 21-inch wheels is better than the EPA ratings for models equipped with 20- and 19-inch wheels, which have estimates of 248 and 256 miles, respectively.

See Edmunds' EV range test leaderboard: https://www.edmunds.com/car-news/ele...s-edmunds.html

I believe Tesla got Sued for this reason, Over Promising Range when it’s not met. Yet with EV’s There’s a million Factors BMW wants to stay safe so they Advertise a Lower Number to not be sued, It’s the same with Horsepower Numbers.

I don’t think they are concerned with lawsuit, they just are smart with PR.

Get me an EV that doesn’t bore me to death, isn’t a fat 5,000lb pig, and doesn’t lose half its value after a month and I’ll consider buying another. Taycan and Mach E couldn’t leave my garage fast enough.

As long as there are plenty of loud, wailing, farting gas cars to race against, EVs are plenty of fun.

I can agree on the weight and value. The Mach E isn’t a bad car, well the ride is but overall a good package.
I don’t think EVs are boring at all, more tech then most cars but depends on what floats your boat.

What car doesn’t bore you to death?

It’s sleek, powerful and has impressive range.
I had an I4M50 as a loaner.

My personal car is a 2022 G80 6MT

The I4 is very impressive with acceleration.

Other than that it has ZERO appeal to me.

As a daily driver my M3 is more spacious and more comfortable and obviously handles and feels better.

On bumpy roads M3 is a 7.9 ride quality

The i4 a 6.0 on bumpy roads

I was surprised my M3 was more compliant and felt solid compared to the heavy I4

Forget the aggravation of an EV.

The I4 did not appeal to me.

The suspension felt like it had 15 inch rims with 60 PSI on cut springs in some circumstances

I’ve also driven newer 2020 540i that’s a really nice car. Would take that over i4

Let us know when it has 400 miles of range. 230 or even 260 isn’t enough. And cut the weight.

These parameters won’t be found for the next 10+ years. Maybe we can hope to see lightweight EVs that retain value by 2040?
The real question is if EVs survive long enough to reach your mile marker.

My range bar is even lower,...I'd like to see a solid 400 miles of range during winter months. That would do it for me!

As an owner of both ICE and EV BMWs, I see 2 major flaws with I5.
1-range: even 260 miles is 209 miles in real world (80% charge for daily usage), in a cold day in Pennsylvania that would translate to way less than 150 miles. even if you have a level 2 charger in your garage you still need to charge it every other night if you have a busy life.
With dismal EA network in NE united state travel between major cities with a car with that range would not be fun. On the other hand, ix give us a very respectable range of 340 miles, that extra 80 miles makes a huge difference.
2-God, its design especially from the back is so “meh”, it doesn’t tell you what car is it if you don’t see the emblem.
The other day I saw a Tesla S and i5 side by side at a red light in DC. As much as I love BMW and I know it’s a much better car than tesla, but model S has way better presence from behind (that thing with it’s bulging fenders was 1.5 times wider than i5!). I think BMW lost lots of opportunities in I5 design.

My dealer game me the i4 with M package as a loaner

I think it’s great

NIce handling excellent acceleration and extremely comfortable and suspension takes lousy roads here without an issue

Even my wife said she likes the ride

If I wasn’t 72 and have had neck and back surgery I would be seriously interested in it

I have an i5 M60. It got about 220 miles of range this past winter in sub freezing temperatures. It’s now spring and my EPA 248 miles is getting 270. Once the temperatures get up to 70 degrees, I expect at least 280. I do have to drive to work tomorrow. It’s 35 miles each way. Then on Friday, I will make the long 50 mile trek to the airport to pick up my brother. I do fun rides some weekends, but I always have plenty of time to charge at home. This is typical driving in Western Washington.

My manual 992.

EV is literally the most boring drivetrain ever conceived. Straight line performance does not = fun. Especially when you weight 5,000lbs.
