Just finished watching it. Overall a very refined and competent product. The styling could use some work. Also it is suggested to get the car with a B58 ; it deserves it for the car should have the characteristics with an inline 6 standard ; not a 4 popper.

They did good job considering the compromised platform. The ICE models have to live on a chassis designed to house a large EV battery pack in the floor. That is also why the proportions look off.

The B58 is a legend at this point. I have it in my family hauler X3 and love it.

The funny thing is that’s also the sentiment from the EV perspective too - compromises with the hood design (lack of storage) and inclusion of an unused transmission tunnel. That being said, making a product that is very familiar and can be had in an ICE, hybrid or full BEV version could end up being the best strategy for this moment in time. MB seems to have created more polarized segmentation by having EV specific models like the EQE and EQS that may not grab as much share compared to the path that BMW has travelled.

I agree, especially in the 7er the aspect is evident, here in 5er they made a better work. However ihmo the Touring is much better, especially 3/4 rear view is very very good, muscular, and tail lights are perfectly shaped.

The touring looks amazing. I’d have an order placed for a 540xi immediately if they offered it in the US. Until then I’m stuck with e450 all terrain or Audi A6 |

They sure are great at what they do. Wish more car reviewers could be more thorough & down to earth / funny as these fellas are. I fully agree this car should not be offered with a wimpy 4-cylinder too.

These guys seem pretty lukewarm on this car. It ticks the boxes but seems pretty forgettable as a driver's car..and don't get me started on the awkward front and front 3/4 styling.
Would rather get an M3 over the 540, and would rather get a CPO Taycan over the i5.

BMW knows its target market for the 5er. And for most of those buyers this is satisfactory at worst and a sweet spot in the range at best. But it’s been a moving target over the decades.
I’m old enough to remember the e39 and how great that car was in M5 form. We also had an e34 before it in our family - drove that car home after earning my learners permit at 15 y.o. - classic BMW. We had the e60 as well in 550i form and the F10 after it. I haven’t driven the new 5er, but it seems so modern relative to the G30 that I test drove. The F10 and G30 were relatively boring cars other than the M5 variants. My impression of this new 5er is it has some of the optional amenities of the X5. The other options are the e class, Audi a6/7, Volvo s90 and Genesis g80. I’d probably go with the e class just for the optional air suspension and RWS. If I’m going for modern luxury might as well go to extremes. The audi a8 and s8 is heavily discounted these days- $15k promo discount, think it’s nation-wide, so that’s a consideration as well. Although it’s not because I don’t want a car like this when the comparable SUV’s are better and more practical. |

I wonder what a true potential buyer sees in this car over say an x3 m40i or x5?
This car won't handle drastically better and even if it does, it wont be good enough for a demanding driver. This car will however lose a TON of utility and cargo space to the suv's... these cars like the 5 are just becoming more more pointless... if u aren't getting the M... just stick to the far better suvs.

Here's why 540 over x3 or x5...
For me x3 was always a cheaply made, awkward looking dwarf-ish SUV. Unless I aspire to haul IKEA furniture every weekend 5 series offers plenty space for a family of four. I would also take M340 any day over X3. Now, X5 is a nice car, but every other mom at my kids school has the 6 cylinder X5. This is NOT to say that 5 series is some kinda rare breed, but where I live don't see them as often as X5 or GLE. Then there's performance vs money, X5 with B58 is just a tad bit too sluggish for me, especially when car is fully occupied. The S68 is fantastic but it commands a different price of admission. I'll pass on X5 PHEV. |
