I’m sorry about your water pump. That sucks. I have not seen this be a common issue. All engines are at risk of some parts failure. The reliability is based on a large sample size, not one car. Gas mileage is only one factor. The 330i can never produce the kind of power a B58 powered sedan is capable of. It’s a combination of power, smooth delivery, efficiency, and reliability. It’s easy to be good at one thing. A Lexus GX will run forever. Very reliable. Also slow and drives like shit. Other cars are powerful and smooth but break all the time or get like 15 mpg. It’s hard to find a car/engine that can do all things well. The B58 does. No one is dogging the 4 banger but you’re going to have a hard time on a car forum building a large contingency that don’t find the more powerful B58 to be the “better” engine.

Ok,...name a BMW engine with more time on the street that's better and reliable than the B58 Gen I,...B58 Gen II,...be it stock or modded,...M or non-M!

Fair enough. Honestly, why don’t you get a 430 or 330 if you liked it better? Life is short and it probably would be pretty easy to do financially.

Why’d you get the M340?
There was a poster in the G30 forum that bought a M550 and ended up trading it back, I think, for maybe a X5 40i or a 540i. Bigger/more powerful isn’t always better for every person. I get it.

New to BMW but loving the B58 in my Z4 M40i, truly spectacular that it delivers performance on par with C7 Corvettes (460hp V8) while obliterating those V8’s in fuel economy.
Mid-upper 30’s mpg easily on highway drives, upper 20’s to 30 around town …..as long as your not in Sport modes otherwise it’s mid 20’s mpg’s. I find it very amusing BMW rates it 382hp when it very clearly is substantially over that rating. |

Because I’ve watched reviews by stupid jurnalists. They were delighted with M340i. Then I have tested 330i RWD, which was an excellent car. After that dealer gave me good offer for M340i… My mistake. I should not buy what I have never driven.

What amazed you about the 330i that doesn’t amaze you with the M340i? Was the 330i RWD and the M340i AWD? Then maybe an M340i RWD would’ve been more your choice.

Needless to say, “we” learned our lesson. I do not really like the 530. Had it as a loaner multiple times. However I did really enjoy the 330i loaner. I think I’d still opt for the M340 but in the 3 series, the 4 cyl is still a fun ride.

I mean technically speaking, it shouldn’t be. What is it that you feel is different in a negative way? The 330i and M340i are nearly identical mechanically. The only major differences should be the B58, e-LSD, a sportier suspension (if comparing against a non-M sport 330i), and VSS (also comparing against a non M sport 330i I believe), and also a MH system. The two cars should behave and feel nearly the same with only the M340i being faster and ever so slightly more sporty driving dynamics.
The M340i mechanically is a lot closer to a 330i than an M3. Perhaps there is something wrong with your vehicle? |

The 330,..or 330e has plenty of power for any everyday driving, etc. For instance,...a US based E36 M3 is rated at 240hp/236LbFt torque,...and Euro version @ 321hp/258LbFt of torque. Yet, the 2023 330i is rated at 255hp/295LbFt of torque!,...and the 330e is rated at 288hp/310LbFt. So yeah, the 330i/330e would definitely met your needs,...or anyone's daily needs. However, many BMW owners want more,...and that's what the M340 provides! I'd venture to say a 330i/e would leave a stock E36 M3,...give the torque and AWD grip!,...and an M340 would leave 'em all sitting at the traffic light! So, you did no due diligence in your decision making process,...except rely on reviews of others,...but you know this already. There's always a next time. Other than that,...just keep the M340 for 6-months to a year,...then trade down to a 330i or 330e! No reviews needed...

Currently 34 mpg for me (in Germany 8.4 L/100km) in the G01. My new G60 520i will hopefully get 44 mpg.
